Royal College of Physicians achieves ISO 14001 certification for environmental responsibility

The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) today announces it has achieved the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) 14001 Accreditation, an initiative that seeks to recognise the highest environmental responsibility standards for organisations around the country.

The historical venue was first awarded the ISO 14001 certification earlier this year after undergoing an in-depth audit process. To achieve this prestigious accreditation the RCP undertook a number of initiatives to improve its facilities, which included new energy efficient LED lighting in the offices and communal areas, the installation of energy efficient boilers and the introduction of recycling bins in the office. Alongside this, the RCP refurbished all its washrooms across the venue, installing new energy efficient hand dryers and lighting systems as well as water saving taps in the process.

The ISO 14001 is an internationally agreed ‘gold standard’ that sets out the requirements for an environmental management system that helps organisations improve environmental performance through efficient use of resources and reduction of waste. By being ISO 14001 certified the venue is expected to lower its operating costs, will be able to use the process to reduce its waste and the size of its carbon footprint and further improve health and safety conditions for its employees.

The Royal College of Physicians Director – Meetings & Events Clive Ostler comments: “We are thrilled to have achieved the ISO 14001 Accreditation which will ensure that we focus on our environmental impact.  At the RCP we make sure that we are as environmentally responsible as possible, so it is great to be recognised for this as we continue to strive towards reducing our carbon footprint.”
