The year that was – The Brewery and Speakers Corner review 2016 at Knowledge Guild

The Brewery and Speakers Corner review 2016 at Knowledge Guild
Last night (Wednesday 23 November), The Brewery, in partnership with Speakers Corner, hosted the latest instalment of the popular Knowledge Guild conference series with a lively review of 2016.   “2016: What a Difference a Year Makes” was chaired by television presenter Hazel Irvine, who was joined by a line-up of industry experts from the worlds of business, politics, sport and futurology.

The panel included former Labour Party cabinet minister Douglas Alexander, leading futurist Richard Watson, and Kevin Gaskell, former MD of luxury car brands BMW, Porsche and Lamborghini. Topics ranged from the year’s major political decisions to the Rio 2016 Olympics and the unexpected events likely to impact the future. This included expert viewpoints on Brexit, the US elections and global financial crises.

The 100 strong audience were welcomed with refreshments and canapés prepared by the in-house brigade, including Thai beef salad, green papaya; roasted Israeli couscous, BBQ harissa aubergines and crispy kale; BBQ jerk chicken rice and peas; coriander panko coated fish and chips, seaweed salad and burnt chili mayo; baked celeriac and potato crisps, truffle beurre blanc and spinach.

Some of our speaker comments included:
“The only thing certain about the future, is that it is uncertain” – Richard Watson

“Behind every success prowls a dream - why should you not be number one?” – Kevin Gaskell

“2016 has reminded us that we can’t actually hold together an interdependent world without interconnected business and politics sectors” – Douglas Alexander

Following the engaging debate, guests enjoyed after-dinner drinks and dessert bowls of black forest chocolate fondant with kirsch sabayon and cherry ice cream, while networking with the panellists after the lively and engaging session.
