VisitYork4Meetings confirms its business as usual following York flooding

York City Centre
VisitYork4Meetings, the business tourism brand of Make It York, has announced today (Tuesday 5th January 2016) that following the recent flooding in York, all city event venues with the exception of three are fully open for business. The three attractions used for conferences and events which were affected and are currently closed are; The York Dungeon, JORVIK Viking Centre and Merchant Adventurers’ Hall.  The city centre including York’s conference venues, hotels, attractions, shopping streets and restaurants, cafes and bars are open as usual.

Laura Freer, Business Tourism Manager at VisitYork4Meetings, said: ‘Following the flooding we would like to offer reassurance that York is open for business and we look forward to welcoming delegates and business visitors to the city throughout 2016, including the Liberal Democrats Spring Conference which will take place at York Barbican on 11 – 13 March 2016.’

With over 16,000 meetings, conferences and events taking place in York every year, business tourism generated £140.7 million in income for the city in 2014 which represented 25% of total visitor spend.  There are currently new streams of investment and new developments underway at a number of venues that will expand York’s conference and meetings portfolio as well as offering new historic and unusual venues.

Projects include the addition of Hotel Indigo, a new boutique hotel and developments at The Grand Hotel & Spa, The Royal York Hotel, York Art Gallery and The Bar Convent Living Heritage Centre.

Laura continued, ‘At the start of the New Year it’s crucial we spread the message far and wide that York is open for business and there is absolutely no reason to cancel any conference or event bookings in the city.  Business visits and conferences make up a significant part of our tourism sector and it’s vital we make a confident start to 2016.’
