Victoria Warehouse hosts high profile political event

Victoria Warehouse hosted one of its most high profile events on Thursday 14th May, when it welcomed Chancellor George Osborne to the venue for one of his first speeches post-election.
Victoria Warehouse’s main event space was chosen as the backdrop for Osborne’s speech, in which he announced plans to give more power to English cities and build a ‘Northern Powerhouse’.

Following his speech, a round table discussion took place in Victoria Warehouse’s new boardroom, with attendees including Richard Leese, Sean Anstee, Sir Howard Bernstein, Lord Smith, Colin Bailey, James Wharton, Greg Clark, Lord Heseltine, Jim O. Neil, Councillor Michael Jones and Clive Memmott.

Commenting on the venue, George Osborne said: “This building has a proud heritage. It was part of this city’s industrial history. Built when Manchester was the workshop of the world. Then it went into decline and spent a number of years derelict. Now it has been renovated and has become an important cultural and event space in the city. The story of this building, its evolution and its success, is echoed in towns and cities across the north of England.”

James Cohen, Director of Victoria Warehouse, said: “It was great honour to host such an important discussion of the future of Manchester and the North at Victoria Warehouse. As a venue that represents the great industrial history of Manchester, Victoria Warehouse was the perfect setting for this discussion.”
