Nationwide campaign comes to Sheffield to inspire the next generation into hospitality and tourism

As part of English Tourism Week, restaurants, hotels and catering establishments across South Yorkshire will come together today at Sheffield Hallam University to pledge job opportunities, apprenticeships and work placements for 16-24 year olds at the BHA’s Big Hospitality Conversation.

With several accolades under its belt including Best UK City for Countryside Lovers, Greenest City in England, Most Underrated City Break Destination and Best Value UK City Break, Sheffield’s popularity as a visitor destination is on the increase. An area of national economic significance, which generates £26 billion to the UK economy annually, Sheffield’s diverse economy is home to major employers including HSBC, Boeing, Rolls Royce, TATA Steel, Sky, Plusnet and BT. What’s more, it has two world class Universities and is ideally located within the boundaries of the Peak District so attracts hikers, runners and climbers.

Ufi Ibrahim, CEO of the British Hospitality Association said: “With a wide range of sectors flourishing in Sheffield, young people have several career choices. The Big Hospitality Conversation will inform and inspire young people into hospitality and tourism career. The breath of jobs and the training available means that bright and focused young people can succeed very quickly and that hospitality offers wonderful growth prospects and job opportunities for all job seekers of any age.”

The Big Hospitality Conversation, a nationwide campaign led by the British Hospitality Association uniting more than 1,500 business to provide hospitality and tourism careers. Over 40,000 job opportunities have so far been created at events like the one at Hallam University and the aim is for the hospitality industry to create up to 60,000 jobs for young people by 2016.

It is recognised that work experience plays key part in influencing a person’s career choice and this is why we are taking a lead role in this initiative through Springboard’s quality work experience programme, INSPIRE, which has been developed to provide job seekers with valuable work experience.

This is the 26th Big Hospitality Conversation to date and the third in an ambitious 2015 programme which will seek to generate job opportunities across the UK at venues including Nottingham, Newcastle, Swansea, Belfast, Lambeth, Cardiff, Hackney, Legoland, Llandudno, Dundee / Perth, Preston / Blackpool, Leeds, Birmingham, Exeter, Maidstone, and the Isle of Wight.
