TV stars shine on Headingley

Dallas Campbell and Rachel Riley
Some of TV’s brightest – and brainiest - stars headed to Headingley this month (February) for a Celebration of Maths.   TV presenters Rachel Riley and Dallas Campbell and quiz expert Mark ‘The Beast’ Labbett, from The Chase, were guests of honour at a day-long conference, organised by the lead school within the White Rose Maths Hub, Trinity Academy, Halifax.

The White Rose Maths Hub is one of the UK’s 34 Government-funded maths hubs, tasked with improving standards in maths across the country and works with schools in Leeds, Calderdale, Kirkless and Bradford.

Around 500 primary and secondary school teachers attended the event at the stadium - home to Leeds Rhinos Rugby Club and Yorkshire County Cricket Club – to attend workshops and listen to talks by maths experts, such as Bang Goes the Theory presenter, Dallas.

Two pupils from Trinity Academy then put Oxford University mathematics graduate Rachel through her paces with a quick fire interview, before guests took part in a light-hearted maths and general knowledge quiz show, hosted by ‘The Beast.’

Throughout the day, chefs from the Headingley Experience, which manages conferences and events at the venue, served a variety of meals and snacks - from baguettes to chicken and vegetable kebabs - from pop-up stalls around the venue.

Jacqui Page, area sales manager at the Headingley Experience, said: “The atmosphere at the stadium was fantastic.

“Headingley really lends itself to events of this scale and our chefs rose wonderfully to the challenge, providing a diverse menu of buffet-style, dishes.”
