Judges descend on Olympia London for world’s largest cheese competition

Around 250 experts including Masterchef’s Monica Galetti, assembled at Olympia London for the Guild of Fine Food’s annual World Cheese Awards, held on Friday 14 November. Judges tasted over 2,500 cheeses from all over the world to select just one champion cheese in what was the biggest gathering of cheeses in the event’s 26 year history.

The dramatic cheese competition, documented and broadcast live on World Cheese TV, marked a return to the capital at an exciting moment in the world of cheese. The Awards, held in different venues over the 26 years, was last held in London in 2007.

John Farrand, MD of The Guild of Fine Food, organisers of World Cheese Awards commented: “Olympia has been a great venue for this year’s World Cheese Awards our 26th year of running this massive celebration of cheese.  Our judges fly in from around the world, so Olympia offers a central location which has enough space for almost 3,000 cheeses and the room to display them for visitors to BBC Good Food Show to enjoy after judging ends.  The buzz as our judges walked down the central aisle of the show was palpable and we are very pleased with the support we’ve had from the Olympia team.”

The World Cheese Awards ran from Friday 14 November to Sunday 16 November at the BBC Good Food Show London.

Bath Blue was declared this year's champion after a heated selection and judging process, which concluded on Friday at 5.30pm.

Bath Blue is made by the Bath Soft Cheese company, run by the Padfield family from Park Farm in Somerset. The UK cheese takes the crown from last year’s winner, the Montagnolo Affine from Käserei Champignon in Bavaria.
