North East tourism awards proves a success for Stadium of Light

Sunderland AFC’s Stadium of Light has proved a winning venue for the North East tourism industry, after successfully hosting the region’s awards this week (Nov 11). More than 400 people attended the NE Tourism Awards at the Stadium of Light, which was organised by regional marketing company, Newcastle Gateshead Initiative.

Winners were chosen from across 15 categories and enjoyed an evening of entertainment, live music and regional food products.

The event, catered for by SAFC’s external catering division, 1879 Events Management, drew on regional providers for the menu, which included a starter of North Shields Quayside crab and salmon and Northumberland cheeses.

Attendees enjoyed herb and butter roasted breast of barn roasted chicken with a mini chicken, leek and tarragon pot pie as a main course, followed by salted caramel chocolate torte and honeycomb ice cream for dessert.

“This event is a great showcase for 1879 Events Management,” said Gary Hutchinson, Commercial Director at Sunderland AFC and 1879.

“To be able to highlight our skills in front of an audience of our peers and those who work in the hospitality and leisure industry across the North East and receive such great feedback is a huge tribute to the work of our team.”

Hosting the event was not the only success for 1879 Events Management on the night however, as the National Glass Centre - where 1879 manages events and operates the Brasserie restaurant – took the bronze award in the Large Visitor Attraction category.

Sarah Stewart, chief executive at NewcastleGateshead Initiative - the organisers of the North East England Tourism Awards on behalf of the Northern Tourism Alliance - said: “We cannot praise 1879 Events enough for the quality of service they provided at the Stadium of Light for the North East England Tourism Awards 2014.

“From the beginning we had every confidence that the team would deliver a first-class event. The staff were attentive, welcoming and could not have done more to ensure our guests had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. I’d like to thank everyone involved for helping to make the awards so memorable.” 1879 Events Management has gone from strength to strength since it launched almost two years ago, winning a wide range of outside catering and events contracts across the North East.

This includes operating the hospitality for Newcastle Pride which this year attracted 68,000 visitors along with operating their own restaurant, The Beach House at the sea front in Sunderland.
