Hermans saddles up to join La Manga Club Ambassador Team

After the drama of the Tour de France, the attention of the cycling world has turned to the Vuelta a España and La Manga Club is celebrating the final Grand Tour of 2014 by announcing that former road star Mathieu Hermans has joined its prestigious team of ambassadors.

Hermans won nine Vuelta stages in total during his professional cycling career and has followed the likes of Scotland manager Gordon Strachan, Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish, ex-England rugby ace Nick Easter and rising boxing star Frank Buglioni by giving his backing to the luxury sports and leisure destination.

As part of his new role, the 51-year-old Dutchman will be responsible for promoting La Manga Club as one of cycling’s new up-and-coming destinations, raising its profile through a mixture of print and social media channels as well as organising his own bike break at Spain’s flagship resort.

Murcia is the ideal destination to swap pot holes and puddles for smooth roads and more than 300 days of sunshine per year, and La Manga Club provides the perfect base with a range of accommodation, restaurants and leisure activities.

The award-winning venue features a wide variety of cycling packages for riders of all abilities, with guests offered a choice of state-of-the-art road or mountain bikes to use during their stay with a series of group or guided rides available.

The bikes are provided by the well-established Biking La Manga company, which also runs three popular weekly group road rides from the resort. There are two evening group rides (Monday and Wednesday) and a Saturday Grupetto, which has featured former Vuelta a España winner and local favourite Alejandro Valverde in the past.

In addition, there are also a multitude of mountain bike trails on the resort’s doorstep which are suited to a varied category of rider, with the surrounding area providing various routes and terrain for cycling, fitness and triathlon enthusiasts to enjoy in beautiful unspoilt Mediterranean countryside.

La Manga Club boasts unrivalled facilities as a sports and leisure destination including three 18-hole championship golf courses and a new Leadbetter Golf Academy – the only such facility in mainland Spain – a 28-court tennis centre and a 2,000sqm spa and fitness centre. It also offers the choice of a five-star hotel, four-star serviced apartments and townhouses and more than 20 bars and restaurants.
