Leading international hearing experts meet in Brisbane

The world’s leading hearing scientists, audiologists, physicians, speech pathologists, educators and consumer advocates are meeting at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC) this week for the 32nd World Congress of Audiology.
Hearing loss is experienced by more than 5% of the world’s population and one in four Australians are expected to have some degree of hearing loss by the year 2050.

Hosted by the International Society of Audiology (ISA), Audiology Australia and the HEARing Cooperative Research Centre, the program covers a range of topics around current issues including the staggering rates of hearing loss in developing countries, an increasing use of internet-based audiological service protocols, and the perils of living in our ever increasing noisy world and the future of hearing healthcare.

Audiology Australia President Professor Louise Hickson (The University of Queensland) said the XXXII World Congress of Audiology also incorporates workshops and instructional courses, and for the first time, a Hear for the Future Expo enabling professionals and the public to see new services and initiatives for managing hearing healthcare.

“It’s time for us to celebrate the fact Australia is a world leader in hearing healthcare and the development of hearing technologies such as the cochlear implant and we want to use this opportunity to raise public awareness of hearing loss, its prevention and remediation,” Professor Hickson said.

BCEC General Manager, Bob O’Keeffe, says the benefits of hosting these influential and prestigious international conferences are far reaching. “We have a very strong scientific focus at the Centre and events of this calibre help bring to the attention of the world Brisbane’s industry strengths as well as encouraging collaboration between some of the world’s leading thinkers, experts and innovators.”

The XXXII World Congress of Audiology will be held on 3-7 May 2014 at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre.
