Bournemouth to host The Big Hospitality Conversation – April 2

A major event to create scores of new job opportunities including work placements, jobs  and apprenticeships in the hospitality sector will take place next Wednesday 2 April, at 10am at The Premier Inn, Westover Road, Bournemouth.

Called The Big Hospitality Conversation, the initiative led by the British Hospitality Association in partnership with the charity Springboard, the Business in the Community (BiTC) and Barclays is part of a nationwide programme that aims to create 60,000 new job opportunities for 16-24 year olds by 2015.  Job Centre Plus, Bournemouth and Poole College, Bournemouth University, South West Regional Assessment Centre will all be represented.

The event will bring together key hospitality industry leaders to meet young people to discuss unemployment and the importance of work experience and apprenticeships.  The objective is to create pledges for jobs, apprenticeships and work placements for young unemployed people in Bournemouth and Dorset.

The National Coastal Tourism Academy is helping to promote the event.  Director Samantha Richardson said: “This event has achieved phenomenal success so far, with more than 34,000 job opportunities created nationwide.  Bringing together young people who are currently unemployed to hear from other young people who have succeeded in securing jobs often with life-changing consequences will provide a recognised route into work.

“This is a not to be missed event and we urge all representatives from every tourism and hospitality-facing business in Bournemouth and Dorset to attend and make their pledge to tackle the issue of youth unemployment in our area.

“The event will also be an opportunity to highlight the huge opportunities this industry offers young people, creating a united approach to work placements, apprenticeships and jobs in Bournemouth and Dorset.  We hope to attract strong support from the entire tourism industry to help change the face of unemployment locally.”

Ufi Ibrahim, chief executive of the British Hospitality Association will be speaking at the event.  She commented:  “The hospitality and tourism industry has recently been singled out by government ministers for its ‘sharp focus’ on job generation and it’s a little known fact that our sector accounted for one third of all new jobs created between 2010 and 2012.  This growth will move hospitality into the top three biggest employers in Britain, and with 44 per cent of hospitality employees under the age of 30 it’s fair to say that this sector is the future.”

The Big Hospitality Conversation’s partners over 1,200 companies which include Whitbread, Thistle Hotels, Marriott, Accor, Hilton, ISS, TGI Fridays, Compass, and BaxterStorey.
