Triple revenue from small meetings

Angie Robinson, Manchester Central, Chief Executive

Manchester Central initiative brings success

In 2013, Manchester Central more than tripled its revenue from small meetings. ‘More organisers’, says Angie Robinson, the venue’s Chief Executive, ‘realised the benefits of looking big when choosing meetings spaces.

‘Although renowned for hosting some of the world’s major events in our larger spaces, such as the breathtaking Central Hall, Manchester Central has 25 different smaller meetings spaces. These are equipped to deliver virtually any type of event for around 40 to 450 people.’

The spaces are popular as break-out rooms during large events. However, Manchester Central generated nearly £250,000 from their use for small meetings over the calendar year.

Angie goes on: ‘A venue that stages everything from party political conferences to international association congresses may not be an obvious choice for events that attract hundreds as opposed to thousands of delegates. In times gone by, Manchester Central wouldn’t have even made the shortlist for these kinds of events, as the huge space of Central Hall led people to believe that we are only available for huge events. But now, as meeting organisers strive for incredible service and best value for money, Manchester Central is embracing this opportunity.’

She makes the point that by selecting a major venue for a smaller meeting, organisers can ‘benefit from the standard of world-class service that larger venues must hone to remain competitive at value-for-money prices.’

For every small event at Manchester Central the following are among the services available: day delegate rates from £40 per person; a dedicated event organiser; free 1GB Wi-Fi for all; a comprehensive audiovisual package; a dedicated concierge team; two servings of freshly brewed coffee, tea and freshly-baked biscuits; and a sandwich or finger buffet lunch prepared by a world-class team of chefs.
