Well Met hosts Women’s European IFAF Championship competing teams

International Federation of American Football teams
Well Met, the conferencing office of Leeds Beckett University, will house teams competing in the International Federation of American Football’s (IFAF) Women’s European Championships that kicks off today (Monday 12th August) until 17th August at the John Charles Stadium, Leeds.

In a first for Leeds, teams from Finland, Austria, Sweden and Great Britain, will take part in the European Championships of American football, which has grown in popularity as a sport for both men and women in the UK over the last few years.  The national teams will take part in matches throughout the week, battling it out for the 2019 European crown.

Leeds is a top spot for American Football in the UK with several local community club teams; two university teams, including Carnegie American Football, who are the current UK university champions; and the Yorkshire Academy of American Football all based in the area.

Clare Vidler Conference Manager at Well Met, said:  “We are really pleased to provide accommodation for the national teams as they take part in the IFAF European Championships.  We are privileged to support the second-ever staging of this event and the first time that it has taken place in the UK.  It is an honour for us to be able to support women’s sport and we are delighted that the international teams will be staying with us at Carnegie village.”

Leeds Beckett University alumni and line-backer, Bethany Pilkington, will be playing for team GB, alongside Leeds Carnegie Chargers players’ Robyn Steward, Elizabeth Bush, Emma Taylor, Laura Harbottle, Jo Mann and current Leeds Beckett student, Lucy Peaty.

Great Britain Women’s American Football Head Coach, Jim Messenger, said:  “It’s great to see how the sport has grown in popularity in the UK over the last few years and it is a real privilege to host the second-ever Women’s European Championships here in the UK.  We know that the city of Leeds is already a big supporter of women’s game and we hope that a week of international matches in the city will help to raise its profile and introduce it to a new audience.

“We’re looking forward to our residential at the Carnegie village where the team at Well Met have supported us in the planning and delivery of this event.  It is the first time that BAFA has staged a major international competition and the assistance and support of Well Met's people along our journey towards this event have been a major part of the success.”
