Crown Melbourne transforms its iconic flame towers on the Riverwalk into an art showcase
Crown Melbourne’s Riverwalk flame towers have been an iconic part of Melbourne’s skyline since they were first lit over twenty years ago. And for the first time in two decades, these famous flame towers have received an unexpected make-over – transformed into fire-breathing dragons thanks to the work of some of Australia’s greatest street artists.

Taking residence on the Riverwalk over the past three days, five local artists painted bespoke dragon head designs on each fire tower to create a real-life fire breathing dragon show and a live art installation for the public to view until February 27th. Acclaimed street artists Mike Makatron, Facter, Mulga, Conrad Bizjak and Ruskidd were commissioned to create the artworks which pay homage to one of the most iconic symbols in Asian culture – the dragon. Seen as a symbol of power, strength and good luck, dragons are synonymous with Lunar New Year celebrations.

Crown Melbourne has celebrated Lunar New Year for twenty years, transforming its Southbank entertainment complex into one of Melbourne’s most popular Lunar New Year destinations each year and 2018 will be no different.

Victorian Minister for Tourism and Major Events, the Hon. John Eren MP, said: “Melbourne’s famous flames along the Yarra will look a little different this month.”

“Lunar New Year holds a special place in Victoria – and this spectacular display is bound to impress and delight Victorians and visitors alike.”

“It’s wonderful to see the celebration back our local artists and create these fire-breathing dragons.”

According to Ann Peacock, Crown Melbourne’s General Manager of Community and Charity, with the addition of the Fire Breathing Dragons Lunar New Year at Crown is the biggest to date. “Our commitment to creating an authentic Lunar New Year celebration for the Melbourne community is something we’re incredibly proud of. This year’s Riverwalk transformation with dragons that come to life has never been done before and provides a completely immersive and unique experience for Melburnians this Lunar New Year.”

Robert Chong, Ex-President of the Federation of Chinese Associations, commented on cultural significance of the event: “Lunar New Year is a very important day in the Chinese calendar. It’s a special time to celebrate with family and friends, and provides us with an opportunity to profile our culture here in Melbourne.”

In addition to the Fire Breathing Dragons, Crown Melbourne will continue its annual program of Lunar New Year festivities which includes the Zodiac Spectacular in the Atrium and the iconic Hawkers Bazaar offering unrivalled Asian cuisine, live entertainment and activities for the entire family.
