TV antiques expert Charles Hanson attending fundraising event

The city’s Coventry Watch Museum is looking forward to welcoming TV antiques expert Charles Hanson to their fundraising event at the Ricoh Arena.
The valuer auctioneer from the BBC’s Antiques Road Trip, Bargain Hunt and Flog It! will be at the Legends Lounge on Thursday, April 10 from 7.30pm when it is hoped £5,000 will be raised by around 250 guests for vital maintenance costs at the Museum.

The independent museum displays watches, clocks, tools and maps celebrating watchmaking history in Coventry – the industry dates back to the 1680s – and the charitable project aims to honour the city’s formidable artistry and craftsmanship.

After a welcome and short presentation from Museum Chairman, Paul Shufflebotham, Charles will entertain guests with tales from the auction world before attempting 50 valuations in 30 minutes and rounding off the evening on the rostrum with an auction and raffle.

Peter Naul, secretary of the Coventry Watch Museum Project, said An Evening with Charles Hanson would be amusing event as well as important in raising funds for its building costs.

“Charles is a great speaker and has a multitude of funny anecdotes to tell from his many years working in the antiques trade and on television,” he said.

“We are asking people to bring along items they would like valuing which are clearly labelled and to leave them on a table at the front of the room.

“Charles will then pick out the 50 most interesting looking objects, talk to the room about them and give a valuation. It is going to be a tall order to give 50 valuations in 30 minutes but it will add to the fun element to the event.

“We will be auctioning a number of items including a specially purchased pocket watch, a garden makeover and a copy of Bradshaw's guide, which has been autographed by Michael Portillo, as well as holding a raffle and asking for donations and pledges of support from guests.

“We would welcome donations from local businesses of more items to auction and/or raffle prizes before the event.”

Liz Cooper, marketing director at the Ricoh Arena, said organisations such as the Coventry Watch Museum Project had an important part to play in the city’s heritage.

“The volunteers at the Coventry Watch Museum Project, which is based at the back of the Shakespeare pub, are all involved because of their passion and dedication in keeping Coventry’s watch-making history alive,” she said.

“Charles is a fabulous speaker and gives good advice and this is a great chance for people who think they may have a hidden treasure in their attic or the back of a cupboard to find out its worth.”
