Peter Vella appointed as Director UK & Ireland by Malta Tourism Authority

The Malta Tourism Authority recently announced Peter Vella as the new Director for the UK and Ireland.

The announcement marks a return to the travel industry for Vella, after working outside the industry since 2009.

His travel industry career includes senior roles with Horizon Holidays, First Choice, TUI and Birmingham Airport, where he spent twelve years as its high profile Business Development Director.

He holds dual nationality with Malta and the UK. Commenting on his appointment, Vella said ‘Malta and Gozo are exceptional visitor destinations offering world class attractions, hospitable people, an appealing culture developed through a fascinating history and a very high quality tourism infrastructure. It also has plenty of sea and sun.

I am looking forward to strengthening the islands’ appeal across the UK and Ireland, where a warm and special bond has existed for centuries’.

Paul Bugeja, MTA CEO commented, ‘Peter has been part in the UK travel industry for over twenty years, with an impressive track record across tour operating, travel retail, aviation, destination marketing and UK short break sectors.

'He also has a passion for what Malta has to offer which made him the obvious choice for the role’.

Malta and Gozo have seen a big increase in popularity in recent years which has been credited to the diversification of events and campaigns that appeal to special interest groups and increased airline connectivity.

Peter Vella has replaced Michael Piscopo, who held the role in an interim capacity since April when former Director, Alex Incorvaja returned to Malta after six years in London.
