New hotel brand OMO introduces affordable, high-design hospitality to Japan with two city-centre openings

Japanese hospitality brand Hoshino Resorts has launched a fourth hotel brand, OMO, with the opening of two city-centre hotels. The first hotel, OMO7 Asahikawa opened on 28 April in Hokkaido, and the second – OMO5 Tokyo Otsuka – opened on 9 May.

OMO is the family-owned company’s fourth hotel brand, following HOSHINOYA, RISONARE, and KAI.

The OMO concept has developed out of a need for affordable city-centre hotels for leisure travellers – hotels which don’t sacrifice the high-design qualities for which Japanese hotels are renowned. All OMO hotels will introduce guests to the area’s best-kept secrets and offer unique experiences and surprises specific to their location.

OMO hotels offer a range of services on a scale from 0 to 9. OMO0 provides a no-frills, room-only experience, while OMO9 signifies the entire OMO offering (amenities may include bars, cafés and restaurants). Both OMO7 Asahikawa and OMO5 Tokyo Otsuka have cafés and lounges for socialising.

Each OMO hotel will include six key features with the aim of raising the quality of urban tourism for both travellers and locals:

• friendly service, with free guided tours of each hotel’s location providing insider knowledge

• real-time information
• inviting public areas
• competitive rates to encourage spontaneous trips.

OMO7 Asahikawa (Asahikawa City, Hokkaido, Japan)
OMO7 Asahikawa opened on 28 April in the heart of Hokkaido. Asahikawa is perfectly positioned for exploring the area’s lively local scene, with its many restaurants, bars and shops, as well as day trips to Hokkaido’s must-see attractions such as the lavender fields and rolling landscapes of Furano and Biei.

OMO7 Asahikawa has 237 bedrooms, laid-back social areas (OMO Café & Bar and OMO Base Lounge), plus a Books Tunnel (a loft-like library with an extensive variety of reading material to feed the inner bookworm). A large wooden neighbourhood (KINJO) map encourages guests to explore off the beaten track and discover the sights, sounds, and scents of Asahikawa’s many gourmet restaurants, where ramen, gyoza and salted pork await. Join a guided tour led by an OMO Ranger (from £6 pp) to find the town’s hottest spots and access the renowned restaurants that only the locals know.

OMO5 Tokyo Otsuka (Otsuka, Tokyo, Japan)
 OMO5 Tokyo Otsuka opened on 9 May. Otsuka’s quiet back streets and the sound of streetcar bells evoke an atmosphere of old-world charm, yet the property is just a minute’s walk from Otsuka Station and an excellent array of izakayas (pubs), bars and eateries.

OMO5 Tokyo Otsuka has 125 bedrooms centred around The Yagura Room, a spacious multi-purpose area which includes a café & bar, a relaxed lounge and a library brimming with information about the city. The design makes extensive use of timeless Japanese materials such as cypress wood and tatami mats. The hotel features traditional Japanese comforts and customs, such as removing shoes before relaxing inside. OMO5 Tokyo Otsuka has a large neighbourhood (KINJO) map on a magnetic wall and offers guided tours led by OMO Rangers (from £6 pp).
