Mondrian London launches exciting collaborations with The School of Life and award-winning artist Maciej Urbanek to coincide with London Design FestivalMondrian London, South Bank’s hottest design hotel, is continuing to strengthen its design credentials by presenting an array of cultural design activities in celebration of London Design Festival this September. Mondrian London will be running a series of talks as well as a workshop with The School of Life, combined with a bold installation from award-winning artist Maciej Urbanek, showcasing Mondrian’s commitment to supporting contemporary art and up and coming artists.
Located on the cultural mile, Mondrian London at Sea Containers was designed by Design Research Studio under the creative direction of visionary Tom Dixon. The striking hotel brings a bold energy to London, blending style and sophistication with South Bank’s eclectic vibe.
Coinciding with London Design Festival (17-25 September 2016), Mondrian London has commissioned an art installation by award-winning artist, Maciej Urbanek. Taking over Mondrian London’s vast lobby windows, the ‘Diamond Propeller’ by Urbanek will transform the lobby through a shimmering play of light and shadows, creating a spellbinding optical illusion. Taking inspiration from Herzog and De Meuron’s design of the Switch House at Tate Modern, Urbanek’s artwork resembles a futuristic stained-glass window through his use of twisted geometry and sharp angles, fused with a nautical theme that ties in with Sea Containers’ heritage.
Mondrian will be offering the opportunity to see the dramatic installation and meet Maciej Urbanek who will be speaking about his design inspiration and upcoming projects. Following this, Jacu Strauss, the lead designer who worked alongside Tom Dixon on Mondrian London, will introduce guests to the hotel with an intimate tour, providing an insight into the design and unique features visible throughout the hotel. The talks will take place on Monday 19 September at 6.30pm and Tuesday 20 September at 9am, with tickets available on a complimentary basis.
The ‘Diamond Propeller’ will be installed in Mondrian London for six months, marking the launch of a series of temporary artworks that will be commissioned by the team and positioned within the lobby of the hotel. Through patronage and sponsoring of contemporary art and emerging talent, Mondrian London is firmly cementing itself as a significant location on the cultural map of London.
In partnership with The School of Life, Mondrian London will also be hosting a taster class in unlocking creativity. Employing a range of experiments to help reveal the hidden creativity within us, The School of Life’s ‘Cultivating Creativity’ class works to boost a key ingredient of creativity: confidence. The 90-minute workshop will run on Thursday 22 September at 6:30pm in the Screening Room at Mondrian London with tickets available at £20 per person.
