It was the first time that the Conference and Events department had entered a submission for the Tourism Awards and to be shortlisted amongst such stiff competition was a significant achievement in itself. However, after Manchester United claimed the Highly Commended award, the judging panel deemed Conference and Events worthy winners for their “considered and respectful” sustainability commitment.
Head of Conference Services, Janet Scull, remarked: “We were absolutely delighted to receive this award. We are proud to champion sustainability and are committed to offering environmentally-friendly conference facilities to delegates and visitors, to support the University’s mission to become one of the greenest institutes in the world.”
The annual awards ceremony, hosted by Marketing Manchester, took place at Hotel Football and was a real celebration of the city’s successes over the last twelve months. Categories included Largest Visitor Attraction, Business Tourism and Tourism Experience of the Year, and saw notable Manchester attractions the Whitworth, the Lowry and IWM North all take home awards.
This latest achievement for Conference and Events is a welcome addition to the department’s growing portfolio of honours, after getting Green Tourism Gold in May and taking home the bronze at the EVCOM Clarion Awards in September.
Winning the Sustainable Tourism Award also means Conference and Events is automatically entered into the Visit England Excellence Awards.
