Portugal named as 'Europe's Leading Destination' for a 4th consecutive year as Madeira and Azores also take home top prizes at the 2020 World Travel Awards

It was another fantastic showing for Portuguese tourism at the 27th annual World Travel Awards, the global initiative to recognize and reward excellence in travel and tourism, as the country was named ‘Europe’s Leading Destination’ for an incredible fourth consecutive year.

Taking place virtually this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the awards saw Portugal overcome tough competition from several other popular tourism destinations including Austria, England, Greece and Spain, to bag Europe’s top prize. The city of Porto was also amongst the notable winners, named ‘Europe’s leading City Break Destination’, with capital city Lisbon being named ‘Europe’s Leading Cruise Destination’. The Algarve took home the award for ‘Europe’s Leading Beach Destination’.

Elsewhere the Portuguese island’s also enjoyed excellent performances once again as Madeira maintained its title as ‘Europe’s leading Island Destination’ for another year, whilst the Azores was named ‘Europe’s leading Adventure Tourism Destination’. Both the Azores and Madeira have been popular amongst the UK public since it was announced that they would remain on the ‘green list’ for quarantine free travel.

Mainland Portugal, the Azores Islands and Madeira are famed for their year-round climate, stunning landscapes and spectacular beaches, UNESCO Heritage sites, historic buildings, unique cuisine, sustainable tourism strategies and activity offerings. Often a banker for success at the annual awards, the Portuguese achieved a total of 27 awards, across the travel and tourism spectrum, ranging from hotels and resorts to city breaks.
