Amadeus' VisitEurope App awarded Ulysses Award by the UNWTO

The 11th UNWTO Awards for Excellence and Innovation in Tourism distinguished the VisitEurope iPad application with the prestigious Ulysses Award for Innovation in Research and Technology, which honors outstanding initiatives in the use of technology for their significant contribution to the development of competitive and sustainable tourism. The VisitEurope app was developed by Amadeus for the European Travel Commission (ETC) in partnership with the European Commission (EC).

Eduardo Santander, Executive Director of the ETC, received the award at a ceremony held yesterday in Madrid (Spain) within the frame of the International Tourism Trade Fair - FITUR 2015. “The VisitEurope application is a key tool to strengthen the image of Europe as the world’s number one tourist destination through the implementation of new technologies while enabling the public and private industry to work together towards the sustainable development and promotion of Destination Europe,“ highlighted Santander.

Juan-Jesus Garcia, Senior Advisor Industry Affairs, Amadeus IT Group, commented: “We are very pleased that the ETC has received this award from the UNWTO for an outstanding contribution to innovation and knowledge in tourism, alongside so many other prestigious winners past and present. We are proud to have been part of this project, and it has been a great privilege working in partnership with the ETC and the EC on making the VisitEurope App a reality.”  He added: “We have been enormously encouraged by the success of the VisitEurope app and website, that provide users with a mobile solution for both planning and booking, as well as obtaining the best information about Europe.”

This initiative positively impacts the competitiveness of the European tourism sector by giving local destinations and services further visibility, while facilitating their interaction with global consumers in new digital channels like mobile. Travel search can be extremely fragmented, but the VisitEurope app unites inspiration and conversion into one user interface rich with content with an aim to strengthen Europe’s image among long-haul markets and overcome issues like seasonality through the use of new technologies.

Designed as both a tablet app for the iPad and a website optimized for any mobile device, the VisitEurope application uses innovative technology to provide travellers with a tool to obtain real-time access to information across the entire online travel planning experience; from the initial inspiration phase to the research, booking and sharing processes.

Currently, the application is available globally and has been optimised at an initial stage for the Americas, including the USA, Canada, Brazil, Argentina and Chile, where it is possible to compute the price of long-haul flights to Europe.
