Windsor Park Head Chef shortlisted for prestigious catering award

Fritz Machala
Sodexo’s Head Chef at The National Football Stadium at Windsor Park in Belfast has been shortlisted for the Contract Catering Chef of the Year award by the Institute of Hospitality. Fritz Machala, who took up the position at the catering, hospitality and event management specialists operation at Windsor Park in October 2016, is a well-known industry figure in Northern Ireland with over 25 years’ experience.

He’s worked to Michelin Star and 3 AA Rosette standards and also set up the award-winning Strudel Bistro, voted the ‘Best Casual Dining’ in County Down in 2012.

Machala says that being shortlisted for the award recognises the excellent hospitality service the whole Sodexo catering team offer to guests at The National Football Stadium. “We take pleasure in using the best of Belfast’s locally sourced produce to come up with new ideas for our seasonal menus. The stadium is a busy venue and we take pride in making sure that the people who come to Windsor Park, whether it’s for a match or non-matchday event, conference, exhibition or a wedding enjoy our first-class modern cuisine.”

Machala, who moved to Northern Ireland from Austria at the age of 12, set up his Café Strudel in 2008 with his wife Sharon to give people in Bangor a taste of Austria. His apple strudel is said to be one of County Down’s best-kept secrets. The two met when Machala was training to a be a chef and together went on to open the award-winning Strudel Bistro.

The Institute of Hospitality Awards for Professionalism recognises the talented individuals who’ve made a valuable contribution to their business and industry over the past year.  And the winners will be announced at the award ceremony on Friday 11 May 2018.
