Madeira awarded world’s ‘Best Island Destination’ 2017

The Portuguese island received the accolade at the 2017 World Travel Awards
The island of Madeira is thrilled to announce that it has been named ‘Best Island Destination’ at the 2017 World Travel Awards held at the JW Marriott Hotel in Phu Quoc Emerald Bay, Vietnam, on 10th December.  This is the third year running this accolade has been awarded to the Portuguese territory, located in the Atlantic.


Madeira has been selected as Best Island Destination by WTA over 17 competitors including the Ambergris Caye, Bali, Barbados, Cook Islands, Cozumel, Crete, Fiji, Hawaii, Jamaica, Maldives, Mauritius, Saint Lucia, Sardinia, Seychelles, Sicily, Turks & Caicos and Zanzibar.  

Paula Cabaço, the Regional Secretary for Tourism and Culture, was thrilled to receive the award, considering it “another important and fundamental recognition for the region and for the entire Madeiran and Porto Santo population.” Paula continued “Madeira’s motivation to deliver an outstanding experience for travellers of all ages, through its authentic local cuisine, adventure in the outdoors, natural outstanding beauty and balmy beaches, is further strengthened by this International recognition from the WTA. This third award as the ‘Best Leading Island Destination in the world’ is joining our four additional accolades as ‘European’s Best Leading Island Destination, all of which we are very proud”.  

Since taking ‘Europe’s Best Leading Island Destination’ in September, visitors have continued to flock to the Portuguese archipelago to experience the beautiful nature and culture. With the same latitude as Morocco, Madeira boasts a sub-tropical climate and dramatic mountainous landscape. Madeira has a unique eco-system and is one of the few places where banana trees grow next to vineyards. In 1999 the archipelago was named A UNESCO World Heritage Site and five areas have been declared nature reserves.
