2014 Egon Steigenberger Prize awarded

The winners of the Egon Steigenberger Prize, which was awarded in Frankfurt on 23 and 24 October 2014 in the categories of Hotel and Food and Beverage (F&B), are Mandy Gruhle from the InterCityHotel Leipzig und Thomas Wosch from the Steigenberger Hotel Berlin. Both prize winners receive a continuing training voucher for the St. Gallen SGMI Management Institute in Switzerland as well as a six months mentoring program.

The approach traditionally adopted by the Frankfurt-based Steigenberger Hotel Group has always been to put staff at the very heart of its business. Initial and continuing training and the fostering of up-and-coming talent are also important objectives. The Egon Steigenberger Prize, an award given to promising young employees, was instigated for this very reason in 1986. The prize is conferred in the categories of Hotel and Food and Beverage (F&B) and comprises ?5,000 of funding, which enables winners to complete a high-quality course of continuing training at the St. Gallen  SGMI Management Institute in Switzerland.  

This year's award in the Hotel Category went to Mandy Gruhle, a 23 year old receptionist at the InterCityHotel Leipzig. Mandy began her career by completing  initial vocational education and training in the occupation of specialist in the hotel business at the Schloss Albrechtsberg School of Hotel and Restaurant Management in Dresden. This was followed by further positions at the Ibis Hotel Dresden and at the TRYP by Wyndham, Leipzig North, before she made the move to the  InterCityHotel Leipzig in 2013.  

The prize in the F&B Category was awarded to Thomas Wosch, a 26 year old demi-chef de partie at the Steigenberger Hotel Berlin. Thomas qualified as a cook at the same hotel before obtaining further experience at establishments such as the Steigenberger Grandhotel & Spa in Heringsdorf. He has been back working in the capital since 2013.  

Following a multistage selection procedure, twelve candidates qualified for this year's final, which was held at the Steigenberger Frankfurter Hof from 23 to 24 October 2014. Participants were evaluated using an assessment centre and individual interviews and were convincingly able to demonstrate their skills and managerial potential to the jury.
