Cairns Convention Centre reflects on 20 successful years

The Cairns Convention Centre is celebrating 20 years since it opened in July 1996. Many congratulatory messages have been received including praise from the Premier of Queensland, Annastacia Palaszczuk, who said, “On behalf of the people of Queensland, I congratulate the Cairns Convention Centre for 20 outstanding years of operation.

“To have a world-class convention centre offering world-class service has been a great boost to business tourism, sport and entertainment in Tropical North Queensland.”

Cairns Mayor, Councillor Bob Manning commented, “In the past 20 years, the Cairns Convention Centre has grown in stature and importance to become one of our city’s most vital assets. Whether it be for sporting and entertainment events, industry expos or international business conferences, the Centre continues to attract large-scale events to our city and is globally recognised as a benchmark performer.”

Compliments for the Cairns Convention Centre also came from within the business events industry with Mike Pickford, Executive Director of ASN Events congratulating the team and saying, “We have had the pleasure of working with them many times since opening and they have consistently delivered excellent, responsive and personalised care for our conferences. Nothing has ever been too much trouble, whether for events that have booked out Cairns or smaller ones of only a couple of hundred delegates. We congratulate them on their 20th anniversary and look forward to many more meetings in the Cairns Convention Centre.”

Reflecting on some major events the Centre has hosted, including the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting, the Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE – held for the first time outside a capital city), Pacific Islands Forum, APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade Meeting, 12th Coral Reef Symposium and the Queensland Sitting of Parliament, Ross Steele, General Manager of the Centre commented, “These important events would not have come to Cairns without a world class facility like the Cairns Convention Centre.”

The crowning achievement for the Centre over the last 20 years are the 2014 and 2004 AIPC APEX Award for “World’s Best Congress Centre”, one of only two convention centres in the world to attain this prestigious client based rating twice. The General Manager of the Cairns Convention Centre, Ross Steele, said , “When we reflect back on the past 20 years we are proud of the part the Centre has played in Australia’s business events landscape and appreciate the feedback we have received from stakeholders and industry.”
