Cathay Pacific announced as Headline Partner to Harmonious Society

The Harmonious Society is a major exhibition of new commissions and UK premieres shown across Manchester City Centre.  The exhibition will feature over 30 major artists from Greater China exhibited across six key spaces in Manchester: Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art, ArtWork, The John Rylands Library, Manchester Cathedral, Museum of Science & Industry and National Football Museum.
Cathay Pacific, which will be the first non-stop carrier from Manchester Airport to Hong Kong with flights beginning on 8th December 2014, has been confirmed as the Headline Partner to the Harmonious Society exhibition. The airline, which already flies from London Heathrow to Hong Kong five times daily, will fly from Manchester to Hong Kong four times per week.

Talking about the airline’s involvement in the exhibition, Adrian Bastow, Head of Sales and Marketing for Cathay Pacific, said: “We wanted to continue to strengthen our links with the local community in Manchester as we prepare to launch our new route to Hong Kong, and as such are delighted to be working with CFCCA to bring its fantastic exhibition to life further. We are keen to further encourage and celebrate cultural and business exchange between the UK and China, and it’s great to be part of this event. Whether artists are up-and-coming or world-famous, through supporting this event, we are able to showcase some of the very best that China and the region has to offer.”

Sarah Fisher, Director of the Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art in Manchester said “We’re honoured that Cathay Pacific have agreed to partner with us on this exhibition as it will be the largest yet in the UK and we hope this is the start of a longer relationship for us with the airline.”

The exhibition will feature more than 30 artists from Greater China. All the works are UK premieres and many of them are specially commissioned and some made specifically to respond to the buildings in which they are sited. This has resulted in stunning works that both reflect the theme, and the amazing spaces in which they are shown, from the ultra-modern National Football Museum to the gothic majesty of Manchester Cathedral.

The exhibition features many major artists, such as Zhang Peili, Chen Chieh-Jen and Leung Chi Wo, as well as rising stars. The ambition of these exceptional artists provides audiences with a place to both wonder and reflect on this era of extraordinary social, ideological and cultural transformation. It is hoped that through both artists and audiences individual memories, personal reflections, imaginations and creative thinking we can generate new understandings of our time.
