Grand Resort Bad Ragaz introduces the 6th Swiss Triennial Festival of Sculpture Bad RagARTz 2015

Enjoy Contemporary Art in Scenic Switzerland at Europe’s Renowned Sculpture Exhibition

Europe’s largest sculpture exhibition returns to Grand Resort Bad Ragaz this year, where internationally-renowned artists transform the leading wellbeing and medical health resort into a magnet for art lovers. The Swiss Triennial Festival of Sculpture, known as Bad RagARTz, will be held for the sixth time in 2015, and aims to be bigger and better than its predecessors, a beacon of the art world and the largest Swiss sculpture event of its kind. The award-winning resort will also be offering a fantastic 3-night package to all guests in light of Bad RagARTz, providing guests with a chance to be at the heart of the exhibition, set amongst luxurious surroundings.

From 9th May until 1st November 2015, approximately 400 sculptures will be installed in public areas of Bad Ragaz in Switzerland’s Sargans region and Vaduz in Liechtenstein, thanks to masters of the art world such as David Bill, Robert Indermaur, Mimmo Paladino, Jörg Plickat, Graziano Pompili, Kan Yasuda and many more. For artists this year, the theme will be dedicated to the colour blue. This is in part as a tribute to the region’s 175th anniversary of thermal water but also as a symbol of the sky, as well as the future, peace and youth.

Striving for the success of previous events across Vaduz, Altes Bad Pfäfers and Bad Ragaz in 2000, 2003, 2006, 2009 and 2012, some 10,000 visitors are expected for the event’s opening on 9th May 2015. During the following six months all eyes will be on Grand Resort Bad Ragaz as it becomes a worldwide cultural phenomenon, hosting not only the art trail but concerts, literary tours and a chance to meet the artists. In the last 15 years, over a million visitors have been drawn to bold and beautiful installations of all shapes, sizes and materials. Spanning a period from late spring, through to summer and autumn, the surroundings of the region change colour, which is reflected in the changing appearance of the sculptures. Visitors are encouraged to take a journey through each artist’s interpretation of the world against the spellbinding backdrop of the mountains and the Rhine Valley. Meanwhile, with a complimentary entry, the concept of free art for everyone is at the heart of initiator, Dr. Rolf Hohmeister’s, plan.

Dr. Hohmeister is a highly-regarded rheumatology specialist at Grand Resort Bad Ragaz’s Medical Health Centre and is the longest-serving member of staff at the hotel as well as patron of the arts. Together with his wife Esther, Dr. Hohmeister’s passion for art has been the driving force behind Bad RagARTz since its inception in 2000.  His mantra is “feelings not francs” and says, "This is no museum. There are no doors and no entry fee. You only need the willingness to encounter art wherever you go.” When he took out a mortgage on his house to finance the first exhibition, his critics predicted bankruptcy. Today, the triennial event is funded by sponsors and is the biggest sculpture exhibition in Europe attracting 480,000 visitors in 2012. The last five events have seen 218 artists from 26 countries donate their work, and in 2012, art weighing 2,000 tonnes made up the trail.

Rolf and Esther Hohmeister firmly believe that Bad Ragaz will continue to bring joy for many years to come: “Bad RagARTz is a work of art in itself; a brand en-route to major success. Far away from the rigid limits imposed by museums, the art has escaped the isolated ivory tower and reached out to people.”
