4000 delegates to deliver £8 million economic benefit to Glasgow

The International Paediatrics Association has chosen The Scottish Exhibition + Conference Centre, Glasgow to host its annual International Congress on Paediatrics in 2021.
The SECC worked in close partnership with the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) and Glasgow City Marketing Bureau (GCMB) to secure the event. The bid took place in Vancouver and the team were competing against Taiwan, New Delhi, Amsterdam and Rome, winning with a 61% majority.

The prestigious medical congress will attract 4,000 delegates and is estimated to be worth around £8 million to the local economy.

Commenting on the win, Kathleen Warden, Director of Conferences at the SECC explained; “Our collaborative team approach was key to delivering a successful bid against significant international competition to host this event.  We have a long standing history of working with The Royal College who have previously hosted their national conference with us, and Europaediatrics in 2013.  We have no doubt that the outstanding reputation of the RCPCH in the global field of paediatrics and child health ensured a victory, and as always it has been a privilege working with them.  We look forward to welcoming this prestigious event to Glasgow and The SECC.

“This win follows a very positive period of conference wins for the SECC so it is not only hugely encouraging but also a great endorsement to see that we continue to attract high profile events of this calibre.”

President of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, Professor Neena Modi said: “I’m delighted to be part of the winning team that successfully bid for the IPA’S 30th International Congress of Paediatrics to be hosted at the Scottish Exhibition and Convention Centre in Glasgow in August 2021. Glasgow is a vibrant and dynamic city and the SECC is a state of the art venue which will deliver an exciting and memorable International Paediatrics Association Congress in 2021. I look forward to working with both the IPA and the SECC and welcoming colleagues and friends across the globe to make the 30th International Congress of Paediatrics the most successful IPA congress yet.”

Aileen Crawford, Head of Conventions at Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, added: “Glasgow has enjoyed a great relationship with The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health for some time now and this latest win – against global competition – reflects not only the continuing strength of that partnership, but the confidence that the international meetings community has in our city’s capability and credibility as a first choice business events destination.

“Collaboration is key to Glasgow’s winning strategy and the unrivalled teamwork that exists across our city partners at every touch point of the delegate experience, combined with the truly world-class facilities available at the SECC, ensures we can compete at the highest level.”
