Glasgow City Marketing Bureau celebrates the 25 year anniversary of its Conference Ambassador Programme

This year Glasgow City Marketing Bureau will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its Conference Ambassador Programme.
As the first Bureau in the UK to establish a programme of this type, GCMB has grown its database of influential city ambassadors to a staggering pool of 1,668 individuals, each playing a pivotal role in helping the city drive success across a multitude of sectors including; low carbon industries, education, medicine, life sciences, engineering, design and manufacture.

In the last calendar year (January to December 2014), Glasgow conference ambassadors secured 176 conferences worth more than £82 million to the city’s economy. Ambassadors help secure approximately a third of the conferences in Glasgow.  

Glasgow City Marketing Bureau ambassadors were involved with a number of successful and competitive bid wins to secure large conferences, some of which include:
• European Society for Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA) Congress 2018 (3,000 delegates worth £4million to the economy.)
• 2020 European and International Societies of Hypertension Joint Scientific Congress (4,000 delegates with an anticipated £6million economic impact.)
• 2016, 2017, 2018 All-Energy Exhibition & Conference (7,000 delegates per year with an anticipated economic impact of £4.6million per year.)  

Aileen Crawford, Head of Conventions at Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: “As a city with a history of innovation and with the largest academic community outside of London, it was natural that Glasgow established the first Conference Ambassador Programme in the UK.  

“We focus heavily on our ambassadors in the city and we provide them with a level of support that is unavailable in other cities in Europe.  

“By assisting our ambassadors we maximise the impact of the conference whether it’s in terms of policy, public interaction and economic benefit. We have strategic relationships to work in partnership at the highest levels in the universities.  

“Our support framework includes us having a university employee, representing the higher and further education sector, based in-house in GCMB. Universities play a fundamental role in the strategic economic direction of the city and are pivotal to growth in business tourism.  

“With a macro perspective, GCMB is able to provide granular solutions to the bespoke needs of its ambassadors.”  

Some of Glasgow’s most recent conferences held in the city, secured by GCMB in partnership with the city’s ambassadors have included:
• 2014 The European Breast Cancer Conference (delegates 4,000, economic value £6.5million) – led by ambassador Dr Hilary Dobson, West of Scotland Breast Screening Service, NHS Greater Glasgow.
• 2014 34th Congress of the Société Internationale d'Urologie (SIU) (2,600 delegates, economic value £4.9m) - led by ambassador Mr Ian Dunn
• 2014 Conference of the European League of Institutes of the Arts, (500 delegates, economic value more than £600,000), invited to the city by a team at the Royal Conservatoire, headed up by Mr Ian Mills.
