Velas Resorts aims for global MICE business

Georgina Godoy, Senior Sales Manager

The 5-star Mexican group has all-inclusive rates

The Mexican hotel group Velas Resorts was founded 25 years ago by Eduardo Vela. An entrepreneur with a big stake in the construction industry, he moved into hospitality when he decided that a condominium project would work well as a hotel. He was proved right and now there are four luxury hotel properties offering different choice locations around Mexico, with a fifth on the way in 2016.

‘It is still a family-run business, with Eduardo and brother Juan at the helm’, explains Georgina Godoy, a Senior Sales Manager’ whom I met during her visit to the UK.

They are now putting more effort into the European markets and are specially looking at the corporate group potential. They have the ingredients for an offer that should prove tempting to event organisers globally.

Georgina explains: ‘The properties are luxurious and located in Mexico’s most beautiful coastal areas. They have a range of cuisines, in addition, of course to local Mexican dishes and their chefs’ own signature dishes ; they have beautiful spas and, unusually at this upmarket level, all our prices are based on all-inclusive packages.’

This is a benefit that more and more event organisers are requesting, as it is very convenient for them and for their delegates. Everyone knows at the outset what the costs will be and there are no unpleasant surprises on the bill at the end of an event for either party.

Possibly the group’s flagship property is the Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit close to Puerto Vallarta on the West coast of Mexico and easily accessed through that city’s international airport. It has 267 suites of one, two and three bedrooms, is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World and has been awarded AAA Five Diamonds as well as the Conde Nast award for Most Excellent Spa Hotel.

Its Convention Centre can host up to 1,300 delegates and there are ample gardens and terraces for outdoor dining.

Leisure programmes are no problem as the region encompasses sand beaches, the Sierra Madre Mountains, indigenous Indian villages and challenging golf courses.

‘The smallest of our properties’, Georgina adds, ‘is the hacienda-styled Casa Velas de Puerto Vallarta. This 80-room boutique hotel is adult-only and can easily be taken over exclusively for a corporate event. It has been ranked more than once among the best hotels, not only in Mexico, but worldwide. In spite of its intimate size, it boasts five restaurants and an on-site 18-hole golf course. And, like our other properties, the rates are all-inclusive.’
