Giant pandas for a tiny country

Jeannie Lim

Jeannie Lim, Executive Director for MICE at Singapore Tourism Board, updates ITCM on the island’s attractions

I met Jeannie Lim on the Singapore Tourism Board stand at EIBTM 2012 I Barcelona. I asked her what was new on her island and her news couldn’t have been more up-to-date. ‘From this very day, today’, she replied, ‘Kai Kai and Jia Jia can be seen in Singapore’. This was what you might call big news, because Kai Kai and Jia Jia are giant pandas, kindly loaned for 10 years by China to add to Singapore’s visitor attractions.

Fairmont goes for gold in Kiev

Christoph Ganster

Christoph Ganster, General Manager of Fairmont Grand Kiev, the brand’s first East European property talks to Sydney Paulden.

Fairmont has entered Eastern Europe with a flourish. Christoph Ganster, General Manager of Fairmont Grand Hotel Kiev, was at EIBTM to tell the world about his new property, which opened in March in time to host some of the top people who attended the UEFA 2012 football finals. ‘It is of classical design’, he says – but that is putting it mildly. You have to look at these images to see how plush and classical it really is. Velvet, original Ukraine-made draperies, gold décor and crystal chandeliers set the style. And in the elegant Atrium Lounge drinks are served in glasses hand-painted in gold.

Expert was 50% out on estimate for a Mauritius incentive

The island’s ITMA steps up the marketing of its attractive offers

As I sat on the Mauritius stand at EIBTM talking with Davina Naiken, I saw the hard-bitten MD of a long-established UK group of incentive houses passing by. I reached out and grabbed him.
I won’t mention his name, but I said: ‘Michael – how much do you think it would cost per delegate for an incentive in Mauritius, inclusive of return flights by Air Mauritius from London or Paris, excluding taxes, traditional welcome with drinks and garlands, transfers in air-conditioned coaches, four nights in a fabulous hotel, half board, with a leisure programme that includes a Fun Drive round the island with lunch and drinks, a full-day catamaran cruise, Gala Dinner at the hotel and a Mauritian Beach BBQ dinner?’

Graeme Barnett, Exhibition Director

Graeme Barnett, Exhibition Director, tells Sydney Paulden of this year’s innovations that indicate the show is continuously evolving

’The 25th annual EIBTM is the occasion for not just celebration, but for looking forward,’ says Graeme Barnett. He is the Exhibition Director and very rapidly goes on to point out what is new at EIBTM 2012 to be held in Barcelona from 27-29 November at the Fira Gran Via. Graeme has had wide and hands-on experience in the Reed’s Travel Exhibitions division and has worked in recent years, simultaneous with overseeing EIBTM, on the launch of AIBTM in Baltimore and CIBTM in Beijing.
