The Lake District’s Armathwaite Hall Hotel & Spa targets Indian Travel Market

This January 2020, Simon Steele, general manager at Armathwaite Hall Hotel & Spa, in Keswick within the northern Lake District was amongst 42 representatives from 13 local businesses to travel to India on an Overseas Trade Mission, as part of Visit Britain and Cumbria Tourism’s ‘English Lake District Indian Forum’.

With India one of the world’s fastest growing economies, the visit was organised to further raise awareness of the Lake District which is becoming increasingly popular with Indian travellers.

The itinerary included a series of face-to-face meetings, workshops and networking events with over 250 Indian travel agents and tour operators.  These took place in Mumbai and Delhi which account for more than 40% of outbound tourism business from India to Britain.

Returning from the trip, Simon Steele, general manager at Armathwaite Hall Hotel & Spa said, “This was an extremely worthwhile trip which allowed me to introduce Armathwaite Hall to a large number of the Indian luxury travel market.  Their professionalism and knowledge was incredible and I am very much looking forward to doing business with them.  With fantastic flight connections now from major Indian cities to the North of the UK, this has opened up a huge opportunity for us.

The agents I met with were particularly interested in our new leisure activities programme as well as the natural, pure and green location that the Lake District has become widely known for.”

With the Lake District sharing its UNESCO World Heritage status with the Taj Mahal, delegates on the trip were also able to enjoy some free time visiting this landmark which is known as ‘the jewel of Muslim Art’ in India.
