Lavender Green Flowers: The British florist of choice for weddings and events

Lavender Green Flowers has an enviable and well-earned reputation for being one of the best florists in the country, with over 25 years’ experience. The Windsor and Chelsea-based company, who has worked on some of the highest profile society events and weddings of the year, has captured the world’s attention.

Set to continue to grow after a game-changing summer, the family-owned florist is investing more time and energy in to their unparalleled level of service and to the execution of bringing to life perfectly spectacular flowers.  

Lavender Green Flowers was founded 27 years ago (in 1990) by Managing Director Sue Barnes, opening originally as a retailer in Maidenhead, Berkshire. Barnes now co-owns the company with her husband, David, and they are based in Windsor and Chelsea, with a fantastic team of forty staff.  

Whilst Barnes initially opted for a career in the City, working in finance and then at a marketing agency, she had always been enchanted by flowers and plants. (Growing up spending more time in the garden than the house, she was fascinated by the scents of the various English garden Roses and herbs the family grew.) Whilst working in the City her creative side began to shine through, and she would sketch during meetings to show clients what was being proposed. It wasn’t, however, until she had moved out of London and had her second child in 1991 that she decided to pursue her desire to start her own business, fulfilling what she had identified as a gap in the local market, opening a florist in Windsor.  

The team of staff, which also includes three of Barnes’ children, create beautiful displays which are installed in situ. Priding themselves in decorating venues in less than two hours, they share a passion for providing the best quality flowers for the best price. The team prioritises helping clients to establish what their own unique and perfectly individual brief is, and so consultations are extremely creative and imaginative from the outset.  

Lavender Green Flowers worked on their first big event two years after opening – a wedding with £32,000 worth of flowers. Gradually they began to become accredited at the major London party venues, and in 1999 they won the coveted contract to supply all of the flowers for the marriage of Prince Edward and Sophie Rhys-Jones, putting them in the international spotlight.  

Lavender Green Flowers’ corporate client list has grown by more than 100% in the past two years. They provide floral designs for the UK’s most iconic buildings and national landmarks on a weekly basis. Venues include the British Museum, Claridges, The Berkeley, The Connaught, Coworth Park, Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace, The Langham Hotel, The National Gallery, The Natural History Museum, Somerset House, St Paul’s Cathedral, Tower of London, The V&A, The Wallace Collection, Westminster Abbey and Windsor Castle. They also create flowers on behalf of 60-100 discerning brides every year.  

2017 has been the busiest year yet, with a huge influx of high profile weddings and outdoor events throughout the summer season. Working at The RHS, Chelsea Flower Show, Aegon Championships, Royal Ascot and Wimbledon, they put the floral designs on the central stage, going above and beyond to deliver stand-out spectacles. (Lavender Green Flowers place a significant amount of emphasis on the whole picture, considering and often advising on every other element of an event that becomes important, such as lighting, furniture and even food.)  

From the initial brief and design process through to the creation and subsequent delivery, clients know that they can rely on Lavender Green Flowers’ highly inventive, hard-working and experienced team. As is often the case, nothing is ever out-sourced meaning installations are slick and efficient. The designers, florists and installers are all part of the Lavender Green Flowers’ family, and they therefore share the same passion and enthusiasm for the perfect execution of every job.  

Barnes says, “I was not interested in learning how to be a florist. I was interested in learning how to sell amazing flowers and how to create breath-taking flower displays. I have always wanted to be the very best I can possibly be at whatever I do, and so failure was not an option. It is incredible to make money out of a low margin product. You need the tenacity of a limpet, self-belief, a great team of kindred spirits and to enjoy the experience… plus an awful lot of luck!”
