ONYX Hospitality Group announces properties in new Asian markets at World Travel Market (WTM) 2016

Thailand-based ONYX Hospitality Group is celebrating an exciting period of expansion across its Amari and OZO hotel brands, with ventures into the new markets of Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Malaysia, Laos and China.
The last 12 months have involved much development for the Group. In January, ONYX opened Amari Havodda Maldives, taking its Amari brand to the Maldives for the first time.

Amari is the centrepiece of the ONYX portfolio of brands and reflects the warmth and energy of an evolving modern Asia. Offering 120-villas including beach and overwater options, Amari Havodda Maldives is an idyllic private island hideaway located in the pristine Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, approximately 400km south of the capital Male.

On 1 April, ONYX was proud to unveil the newly revitalised Amari Koh Samui. The popular beachfront Thai resort re-opened following a 12-month refurbishment, with freshly revamped guest rooms, public and outdoor areas, spa and restaurants. Guests visiting Amari Koh Samui are now able to see and experience the bright and comfortable spacious surroundings, reflective of warm, Thai-inspired design elements with a contemporary twist. The resort comprises of 197 guest rooms across three wings – the Garden Wing, Thai Village Wing and Beach Wing with room categories to fit all travel needs.

Looking ahead, ONYX Hospitality Group’s OZO brand is continuing its expansion with a new property scheduled to open in 2017. OZO Hoi An marks the group’s entry to Vietnam and the hotel will also become the largest OZO property to date with 364 rooms. OZO is a select service hotel experience created for travellers who crave the basics done right – a great night’s sleep, energising breakfasts and reliable connectivity to the world and the local area.

Additionally scheduled for a 2017 opening, Amari Galle will be the first Amari in Sri Lanka and the third ONYX property in the country, following on the success of the already established OZO Kandy Sri Lanka and OZO Colombo Sri Lanka. Tourism in Sri Lanka continues to thrive, and there is growing interest amongst international travellers to destinations beyond the capital city of Colombo.

Located in the southwestern coastal region of Sri Lanka, approximately 90 minutes by car from Colombo, Galle offers a variety of historical and cultural features, including the famous Galle Fort, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by the Europeans. Amari Galle is located on a beautiful beachfront site, a short distance north of Galle Fort.

The property will have 172 rooms and suites, all featuring direct sea views. It will also present an extensive multi-tiered pool deck with direct beach access, Amari’s signature Breeze Spa, two restaurants, banquet facilities and a fitness centre. Another first for the Group, Amari Yangshuo Guilin will open as the first Amari in China in the second quarter of 2017. In a stunning location, the 72-room hotel will be situated next to one of the most historical streets of downtown Yangshuo, as well as offering easy access to the area’s beautiful scenic attractions including peaks, rivers, caves and temples.

As part of its growth strategy to introduce its brands across the Asia-Pacific, ONYX has recently announced a partnership agreement with Tang Charoen (TCR) Group Co., Ltd. to manage three Amari hotels in Lao People's Democratic Republic, making ONYX’s market entry into Laos. The first Amari property, in Vang Vieng, is due to welcome its first guests in 2017 while the other two properties in Vientiane and Pakse are both scheduled to open in 2020. Amari’s signature Amaya Food Gallery, Breeze Spa and creative meeting venues will be featured in each property.

ONYX currently has four projects under development in Malaysia, marking the first time all three of the Group’s core brands – Amari, OZO and Shama – will be present in one country outside of Thailand. The first to open will be the 242-room Amari Johor Bahru, which will begin welcoming guests in early 2017. Meanwhile, the recently signed projects, Shama Medini and OZO Medini, are set in the multi-purpose UMCity Medini Lakeside Complex with 232 serviced apartments and 198 rooms respectively. Both properties are scheduled to open in 2018.

Peter Henley, Chief Executive Officer, ONYX Hospitality Group commented: “We are very pleased with our achievements in 2016 which has been a highly significant year for ONYX Hospitality Group. We are delighted to be strategically expanding the presence of our hotel brands beyond Thailand across the Asia-Pacific region, and excited to introduce our flagship Amari brand to Sri Lanka, China and Laos. We are thrilled by the progression of OZO and the response to the brand among hotel guests and investors. One of our key news items for 2017, introducing our unique OZO brand concept to Vietnam, is set to take ONYX into new markets in the coming years.”

ONYX currently has a portfolio of 67 properties, including 41 properties in operation and 26 in development, ensuring its strategic plan to manage 81 hotels, resorts and serviced apartments by 2018 is on track to being achieved.
