andBeyond launches new bushmen experiences in Botswana and Tanzania

andBeyond bushmen experiences

A land full of memorable experiences – discover the lifestyles and learn the traditions of some of Africa’s oldest cultural tribes

andBeyond – one of the world’s leading experiential travel companies – has launched brand new Bushmen experiences in Botswana and Tanzania.  Designed so guests can meet local tribes and see a very native way of life, the experiences include learning how to hunt, basic survival skills, cooking local delicacies and joining bushmen to discover the cultural heritage of these nations.

The new Bushmen experiences will be available at andBeyond Xudum Okavango Delta Lodge in Botswana and andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge in Tanzania:
andBeyond Xudum Okavango Delta Lodge, Botswana
Bostwana has diverse ethnic groups living side by side in what has historically been a very peaceful country.  One of the most interesting groups for visitors to meet are the scattered groups of hunter-gatherer people that we would refer to as Bushmen, or the San.  African continent’s first inhabitants - with ancestral roots dating back 30,000 years – the San lead a semi-nomadic lifestyle.

The andBeyond half-day guided walks with the San people introduce guests to authentic hunting and survival techniques including lessons on bow and poisoned arrow use, as well as traps and throwing sticks fashioned out of raw materials found in the wilderness. Guests can also enjoy the opportunity to listen to the Bushmen’s interpretation of the natural surroundings; wildlife, vegetables, fruits and insects, any of which may serve them as a food source.

Right on the edge of the Okavango Delta - in its own 25,000-hectare wildlife concession - andBeyond Xudum Okavango Delta Lodge is shared by just 18 guests. It is a water and wilderness experience with the excitement of big game, including the continent's largest surviving concentration of elephant and buffalo, and a diverse bird life including the elusive Pel's Fishing Owl.  Each of the nine split-level safari suites features a large bathtub, al fresco showers, private plunge pool and a lofty rooftop look-out over the Delta.

Rates at andBeyond Xudum Okavango Delta Lodge from £712pppn, based on two sharing and including all meals, two safari activities per day, half-day Bushmen Experience and transfers.

andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, Tanzania
The Hadzabe people are East-African hunter-gatherers who inhabit the land near Lake Eyasi in northern Tanzania.  Now, with andBeyond, guests can enter into this world of charismatic people and learn more about their existence which has changed little from 10,000 years ago.

Accompanied by an andBeyond ranger, guests will learn about time-honoured hunting techniques, survival skills, food preparation and cultural norms.  Time permitting, guests will also have the opportunity to visit a nearby blacksmith who handcrafts the metal spear tips for the Hadzabe’s bows. Alternatively, those who enjoy hiking can enjoy a guided walk through the cultural landscapes of Lake Eyasi.

On the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater, with breath-taking views, are the sumptuous safari suites at andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge. Inspired in design by the Maasai mud and stick manyatta, this is without doubt one of the most spectacular lodges in Africa.  Frequently described as Maasai meets Versailles, the three separate and intimate camps have a total of just 30 suites, each stilted, made with handcrafted mud and thatch and adorned with antiques, grand chandeliers and elegant African treasures.

Guests can enjoy this Bushmen experience from £580 per group/ per day. This includes use of a private vehicle for the day, Hadzabe interaction and an andBeyond guide, all entrance and concession fees for Lake Eyasi and the Hadzabe conservancy. Guests must be 12 years old and over.
