Iconic Northern California property celebrates 100th Anniversary with rebrand and completion of multi-million dollar restoration

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts has announced that Claremont Club & Spa, A Fairmont Hotel is the newest addition to the company’s unrivalled portfolio, joining the ranks of landmark Fairmont hotels including The Plaza in New York, Fairmont Banff Springs in Canada and The Savoy in London.
Built in 1915, and ideally nestled at the base of the Claremont Canyon Regional Preserve, overlooking scenic San Francisco Bay, the Claremont offers 276 handsomely restored guestrooms and suites, an impressive club and spa, and an unparalleled dining portfolio.

Fairmont’s parent company, FRHI Hotels & Resorts purchased the Claremont in 2014 in partnership with California financier Richard C. Blum and his family. Following a multi-million dollar capital investment project, which updated the hotel’s facilities and enhanced its castle-like architecture, the majestic hotel sits in the Berkeley and Oakland Hills and is now poised to continue its rich legacy into the next millennia as a Fairmont hotel.

“Fairmont Hotels & Resorts has long been a pioneer when it comes to operating many of the world’s most beautiful landmarks, full of rich history and cultural significance. For a century, Claremont Club & Spa has been welcoming guests as one of northern California’s most revered hotels, so it has been an honour for Fairmont to take on this heritage hotel’s restoration and reintroduction as a Fairmont property,” says Kevin Frid, president, Americas, FRHI Hotels & Resorts. “Growth continues to be one of our top priorities, so we are extremely excited to be adding an asset as attractive as the Claremont to the Fairmont family.”

“We are immensely proud to present the new Claremont Club & Spa, A Fairmont Hotel,” adds General Manager Leonard Czarnecki. “A long-time hallmark of California hospitality, the Claremont is again a place where guests will experience world-class service and architectural splendour, serving as a beacon of culture and refinement throughout the Golden State.”

The Claremont marks its 100th anniversary this year with the culmination of an extensive restoration that starts at the hotel’s entrance with the grand gallery as clear evidence that the guest has indeed arrived. The lobby has been opened up to spectacular views of the bay, while the welcoming lobby lounge and bar are a haven for the weary traveller to linger and the surrounding community to enjoy. Aging hardwood floors have been restored as well as new  carpets, book matched mahogany and hand carved leather upholstery create a rich and refined, plush ambiance. Bold touches of colour keep the design fresh and current, while transitional furnishings of exceptional quality complement the classic interior and whimsical contemporary art suggest the presence of a true collector.

“The grande dame of the San Francisco Bay, this fabled hotel recollects another era and gently pulls it into the present day. A spectacular update initiated by Fairmont Hotels & Resorts as part of the new ownership has revived this iconic property and it has gracefully landed here in the twenty-first century. She’s smart, she’s elegant, and her legacy will continue to stand for decades to come,” says Kirk Nix of KNA Design, the Los Angeles design firm who oversaw renovation of the lobby, lobby lounge and bar, and new restaurant.

All 276 guestrooms have been updated by global design firm Gensler, including the unveiling of a luxurious new Presidential Suite. Slated to open in early 2016, Chef Dominique Crenn’s elegant neighbourhood brasserie will serve a locally sourced seasonal menu, joining the hotel’s three other exceptional restaurants and lounges.

Claremont Club & Spa, A Fairmont Hotel also boasts a notable spa and club facility complete with kids’ pool, tennis and fitness centre, rounding out the resort’s leisure offerings. Meeting and social event planners will have access to 20,000 square feet of meeting space, including the Empire Ballroom that can accommodate upwards of 450 attendees and a number of meeting rooms with spectacular Bay views. The iconic urban resort is also home to a private social and tennis club with loyal members who enjoy hotel amenities, fitness facilities and lifestyle programming.
