The Great Pompeii Project with Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria

Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria
Pompeii, one of the world’s largest archaeological areas and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997, is undergoing a major restoration, funded by the European Union in a €105 million project. The Great Pompeii Project will restore frescoes, renovate and improve the preservation of Pompeii.

Visitors can now see the first significant improvements:
• Amphitheatre: Created in around 80BC, the amphitheatre hosts the poignant exhibition, “Pompeii and Europe 1748-1943” displaying recently restored casts of victims of the Vesuvius eruption in 79AD. • Suburban Baths: Together with a tepidarium and a calidarium, this privately owned spa facility boasts one-of-a-kind erotic paintings in what previously would have been the locker room
• Villa of the Mysteries: This 2,500sqm luxurious residence reopened in March 2015 after two years of restoration. The painting cycle that gives the villa its name has been restored to its original beauty, while the meanings of the frescoes are not entirely clear yet
• Teatro Grande: The Large Theatre, which housed up to 5,000 spectators, is now being used to stage opera and dance shows at the annual Pompeii Festival

Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria, built on the ancient foundations of a villa designed for Emperor Augustus, sits on the clifftops of the Amalfi coast in Sorrento, with breath-taking views over the bay of Naples and Vesuvius. The hotel’s grounds are filled with Roman ruins that can be seen by the guests as they relax in the vast gardens, and provides the perfect base from which to explore Pompeii and the surrounding areas.

Pompeii is just a 45-minute drive from Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria and can also be accessed directly by the new Campania Express train, launched in May 2015. Sorrento train station is only a 3-minute walk away from Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria.
