New “Learn to…” experiences with Fairmont Hotels & Resorts

Bushcraft in Kenya, Aloha in Hawaii and Sommelier Secrets in California

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is continually looking at new and exciting ways for guests to get under the skin of the destination.  This winter the hotels have launched a series of new experiences that teach a new skill or offer a new insight into the local culture.

Here are a selection of favourites:
Become a Sommelier for the day in Sonoma
Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa, California
Named one of Wine Enthusiast’s ‘Top 10 Best Wine Travel Destinations for 2014’, Sonoma County represents the best of Northern California — premium wine, farm-to-table dining, organic farms and orchards, breweries and distilleries, all surrounded by incredible natural beauty. This winter, Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa has created the perfect experience for oenophiles.  The Sommelier Experiential Package includes a VIP tour of the Benziger Family Winery, a visit to two other local wineries where the sommelier will talk to guests about different grape types, weather patterns and fermentation as well as provide plenty of tips about up-and-coming wines.  A special wine-paired Chef’s Tasting Menu for two in the Michelin-rated Santé dining room and signature wine and cheese on arrival is also included.

The Sommelier Experiential Package starts from $779USD (£472) for a two-night stay.  Rate based on two sharing and includes all of the above and breakfast.

Wilderness Training in Kenya
Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club, Kenya
For those who have also felt inspired to conquer the great outdoors like bushcraft experts Ray Mears or Bear Grylls, head to Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club who is now offering guests an introduction to survival skills in the African bush. Led by the hotel’s naturalist and Kenya Wildlife Service Ranger, Jonathan Ledama, guests will explore the diverse terrain found in the region – which includes stunning waterfalls, caves and gorges - and learn how to rely on natural resources as well as practice skills that might be required for the great outdoors.  From foraging for wild edible and medicinal plants to campfire cookery, navigation techniques and wildlife tracking and hunting, the Wilderness Training experience is suitable for all abilities.

Rates for Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club, start from £285 for a Fairmont Room excluding breakfast

The Olelo Hawai’i classes, led by certified cultural coach Jonelle Kama offer guests the chance to listen to the melodic and metaphorical language as well as learn how to pronounce the words they see around the islands and understand how the language is used today.  The trick for guests is to remember a few words to take home and share with friends!
