Alila Villas Uluwatu receives EarthCheck Gold honour

Alila Villas Uluwatu, on the island of Bali, has been awarded the prestigious Gold Certification from EarthCheck, widely regarded as the world’s most rigorous environmental management program. Earth Check has been designed specifically for the travel and tourism industry.

The gold level of certification is reserved for organisations that have consistently demonstrated over a period of five years their commitment to their host communities and consistently shown high standards of environmental management. To gain Gold Certification, Alila Villas Uluwatu was required to submit a years worth of operational data to EarthCheck for benchmarking against internationally recognised standards of best practice.

A number of key environmental indicators are measured including energy and water consumption, total waste production and community commitment. The resort’s environmental policies include the use of energy-efficient lighting, the minimisation of water consumption, recycling of solid waste products, and the use of recycled products whenever possible, all of which have contributed to a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions for its operations.

“Achieving EarthCheck Gold Certification is not an easy task to achieve,” explains EarthCheck CEO Stewart Moore. “There are no short cuts, no ways to buy your way in; it’s a matter of being able to prove the integrity of an organisation’s operational practices year-in and year-out, and then be willing to have everything verified by an independent, third party auditor. This requires a commitment across all levels of an organisation, from the very top, all the way through to staff and even volunteers.”

To increase the standard of living for host communities, Alila Villas Uluwatu sources produce and supplies locally wherever possible. The majority of the resort’s staff are from the local community, helping to foster eco-cultural understanding and sustainable development through the environmental education of staff, guests and suppliers as well as boosting and giving back to the local economy. This EarthCheck gold certification is the latest in a string of sustainable achievements for Alila Villas Uluwatu, who continue to reaffirm the resort’s commitment to sustainable tourism practices.
