ME by Meliá celebrates launch of ME Dubai by Zaha Hadid  with ‘Crest’ Installation at V&A during London Design Festival 2014

ME Dubai
To celebrate the forthcoming launch of ME Dubai, the first hotel to be entirely designed by Zaha Hadid, ME by Meliá announces its partnership with Zaha Hadid Architects at the V&A during London Design Festival 2014.

The V&A is London’s most prominent cultural hub during the London Design Festival (September 13th – 21st), attracting thousands of global visitors during this time, for its awe inspiring exploration of design.  An annual, pivotal installation becomes the talking point of the festival and this year ‘Crest’ commissioned by ME by Meliá, has been chosen to transform the V&A’s courtyard fountain by providing an engaging feature across the pool in the centre of the V&A’s John Madejski garden.

This beautiful sculpture will continue its life-cycle as a permanent exhibition within ME Dubai once the festival draws to a close.  ‘Crest’ invites an intriguing dialogue between the sleek, streamlined structure and the historic backdrop in which it is sited. Visitors will have a new focal point to the Museum’s courtyard which will capture their attention and encourage them to explore the new quality of space created within.

The ME brand took the London hotel scene by storm last year with the launch of Foster + Partners’ first entire hotel project in the UK. ME Mallorca and ME Ibiza have launched this summer, with ME Milan in 2015 and ME Dubai opening in Spring 2016.

Zaha Hadid said of the installation, “‘Crest’ animates and engages with the V&A’s courtyard and we’re looking forward to seeing the installation inhabited and enjoyed by visitors.  Precision engineered as a pre-stressed aluminum shell of minimum thickness, ‘Crest’ is designed as a demountable sculpture to be installed at the ME Hotel, Dubai; continuing to explore the relationships between fluid and Cartesian, solid and void, surface and structure inherent within the hotel’s design. We envisaged a piece that would emerge from the fountain at the centre of pool. The metallic surface will reflect the sky on one side and the rippling water on the underside.”

ME Dubai will be located in the Opus building in the Burj Khalifa District.  The hotel will have 100 rooms, including four penthouse suites with private roof terraces and the brand’s signature Suite ME.  ME Dubai will also be home to a Michelin-star restaurant and exclusive F&B brands.

Mr Escarrer, CEO of Meliá Hotels International commented: “we are very excited that this spectacular piece of public art at London Design Festival will launch ME Dubai. The ME brand is centred on culture and design and this continues our series of renowned collaborative partnerships following the launch of Foster + Partners’ ME London last year.”
