Experience the wonder of the Himalayas, India: Adventure, history, culture and wildlife

Award-winning destination spa Ananda in the Himalayas may be world-renowned for its tranquil setting and ancient yoga techniques, but from October it will also provide thrill seekers with the ideal base for outdoor adventures, experiential and spiritual travel experiences and world-class wildlife excursions.

Detoxing, relaxing and rejuvenation may be the core reasons for many guests visiting Ananda, and this breath-taking mountainous region, however intrepid explorers can also use this luxury spa as their gateway to a myriad of Himalayan experiences, with a multitude of adventure and religious sites within easy reach of this wellness destination. Whether exploring the surrounding area on foot, by bike or by water, guests can make the most of what the mighty Himalayas offers and finish a packed-itinerary by unwinding at the spiritual base of Ananda spa.

Spread over 100 acres of unspoilt landscape in the midst of the Sal Forest, Ananda is located amongst nature - which can be experienced by joining guided trails throughout the surrounding forest, during which time guests have the opportunity to spot over 40 different species of birds.

Furthermore, the Himalayan foothills provide unique trails for trekking and cycling. From gentle strolls to more challenging hikes, the spectacular mountain views experienced en route are simply stunning and will leave walkers and cyclists wishing to see more. From climbing high to enjoy panoramic views of the snow-capped mountains such as Chaukhamba, Neelkanth and Gamukh to visiting an authentic farming village, there are local trails suitable for varying levels of ability.

Trekking is also a fantastic way to catch a glimpse of the beautiful Himalayan birds, including Barbells, Babblers, Drongos and Golden Eagles. The terrain is diverse, ranging from small hills, green pastures and mustard plantations to steep snowy peaks. Trekkers will be treating to spectacular views as they turn each corner with waterfalls, rivers, colourful wildlife such as wild peacocks and quiet picnic spots to enjoy along the way.

For adrenalin junkies, Ananda can also organise trips to various white water rafting sites in the mighty Ganges river. Many different rivers merge in the Himalayas, making it the renowned white water rafting capital of India. There are sites catering for all levels of ability and experience on the water. The rafting point at Shivpuri is just a 75 minute drive from Ananda, and a further half an hour drive away is where thrill seekers can also experience "The Wall", the most powerful Grade 4 rapid on the Ganges, although perhaps not for the faint hearted.

Further experiences in the Himalayan foothills include a wildlife safari within the Rajaji National Park. Spread across 820 square kilometeres around Ananda, this beautiful national park is home to 460 species of birds including the India Roller, Himalayan Falcon, White Necked Kingfisher and Great Indian Hornbill. The park is also home to Asiatic wild elephants, leopards, panthers, chital and wild boars.

Step even further away from the stresses of everyday life, by taking time to learn about India's spiritual core, found close by to Ananda. The destination spa's ideal location, approximately 45 minutes away from some of India's most precious and spiritual sites, means that guests can experience some very special unique rituals by visiting ancient temples, ashrams and monasteries dating back over 1000 years.   Without having to venture far, guests can gain an insight into Hindu mythology and find peace and quiet, and experience sites that can have a lasting calming affect on visitors.

Returning to Ananda after a day, or several days exploring guests can relax and also enjoy fine dining, music and specialised therapies ensuring guests leave feeling refreshed and recharged, whether returning straight home or heading on for further adventures.
