Discover 'American Places and Faces' at Le Méridien Piccadilly

From 29th January to 28th February 2014, the Terrace Grill & Bar at London’s Le Méridien Piccadilly hotel will showcase a selection of unusual and inspiring photographs of the United States of America and its residents in an exclusive American Airlines’ exhibition by Mark Chilvers. The exhibition will run across two key American dates – Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday (born 1809) on 12th February and US Presidents Day on 17th February.

In 2013, American Airlines tasked British photographer Mark Chilvers with visiting all 50 US states in just 30 days and the result is a collection of striking images featuring some of the many characters he encountered along the way, set against an equally distinctive backdrop.  Showing the real diversity of the United States, the photographs include an astronaut, an Olympian, a barmaid, a rodeo cowboy and an Old Order River Brethren, each pictured in their own surroundings, from remote ranches to bustling metropolises.  The images will be shown together for the first time in the exhibition at Le Méridien Piccadilly.

Chilvers says: “In Jan 2013 I travelled - with a journalist and filmmaker - all around the USA in 30 sleep deprived days. We covered thousands of miles and boarded over 40 planes. From the swell of Hawaii to the ranches of Dallas, the absolute constant was the friendliness of the people we met. They offered us directions, they wished us luck, they told us that we were crazy. And then almost without exception, those that were asked, agreed to be photographed as part of my state to state portrait project.”

In celebration of this remarkable photography exhibition, Le Méridien Piccadilly’s Chef Michael Dutnall has devised a delicious ‘All American Afternoon Tea’.  The specially-themed Afternoon Tea features savouries and pastries inspired by classic American flavour combinations, such as  pastrami sandwich with Thousand Island dressing, Mississippi mud pot, New York cheesecake and pecan pie.

To accompany their Afternoon Tea, guests can also choose from two exclusive American-influenced cocktails. The ‘Uncle Sam’ is a fruity blend of Maker’s Mark Kentucky bourbon whisky, plum liqueur, lemon juice, homemade cinnamon syrup and apple juice, whilst the ‘American Dream’ also combines Maker’s Mark with lemon juice, scented cardamom seeds, Amaretto, fresh pineapple and orange bitters.

The ‘All American Afternoon Tea’ will be served daily in the Terrace Grill & Bar from 12pm to 6pm from 29th January to 28th February and costs £30 per person including an ‘Uncle Sam’ or ‘American Dream’ cocktail.  Cocktails alone are priced at £12 each.

All of the photos in the ‘American Places and Faces’ exhibition are available to purchase.
