Roger St. Pierre discovers two very different Best Western hotels and a conference centre sharing a single site in Northern France
Conveniently located on the edge of the sleepy little village of Gosnay, but just a few minutes from the busy A26-E15 autoroute that links Calais to Paris, the Chartreuse Du Val Saint Esprit estate incorporates not only two distinctively different hotels, but also a conference centre and beautiful gardens.


The present buildings are mainly 18thC, but this rambling former convent has roots that date back to 1320. It was in 1792 that it became a palatial private residence and it was accorded the prestigious Monuments Historiques rating in 1986.

The property is enclosed by a massive red brick wall, with imposing wrought iron gates giving an impressive access to the wonders within.

It is set in the Nord Département, close to Béthune, at the heart of the history-laden Artois, it has more than 300 free parking spaces for guests and provides a perfect base for exploring Flanders and Picardy as well, being just an hour from Paris and an hour and a half from Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport and the same from Brussels, by high speed TGV train.

The major towns of Béthune, Arras, Lens and Lille are all nearby, as are the Channel ports.

The main château-like 4-star-plus Hôtel La Chartreuse du Val Saint Esprit oozes luxury and grand period style. Beautifully decorated and furnished in fittingly historic manner, yet at the same time offering all modern amenities, from free Wi-Fi to satellite TV, the 53 spacious guestrooms and suites offer both prestige and comfort – a wonderful choice for incentives or private stays

Within the same building is the glamorous carved wood-panelled Robert II gastronomic restaurant, offering a modern take on classic traditional French dishes prepared with the accent on delicate flavours and aromas and presented with great panache. This is fine dining at its zenith.

Just a few steps away is the recently opened and more business-orientated 3-star Best Western La Métairie, situated in sympathetically modernised former stables and new outbuildings.

Here there’s a choice of two restaurants – the traditional bistro style La Distillerie and the international cuisine-orientated Le Vasco – whose changing menus reflect market availabilities to ensure the best products at the best moments.

A typical menu: lemon fillets stuffed with seafood, with citrus sauce and coriander, followed by stuffed saddle of rabbit with petits pois mousse and a selection of desserts.

The Salons de la Chartreuse seminar and conference complex has available ten spacious, lavishly appointed meeting rooms for groups of 10 to 900 in a range of settings from the historic to the contemporary, all with natural light and the latest technology. The biggest meeting space is provided by the stunningly gracious Agnes de Bourgogne and Philippe Le Bon Suite, which can entertain up to 500 delegates, theatre style, or 800 for a glittering cocktail reception.

The high-tech Mahout de Artois amphitheatre has a 300 seat-with-writing tables capacity and can provide a comprehensive range of equipment, including four ceiling-mounted plasma screens, a 4x3 big screen, integrated projection, a video conferencing system and simultaneous projection into multiple salons. Breakout rooms of various sizes are also available.
