Michelle Chenery reports on a stay at the DoubleTree by Hilton New York City - ChelseaIt’s a long name, but it’s worth remembering. Some of the rooms at the DoubleTree by Hilton New York City-Chelsea have views onto the Empire State Building and, beautifully illuminated at night, that is really one of New York’s impressive sights.
This is the city that is continually bustling and so a hotel that is set in a quieter Midtown Manhattan in a residential neighbourhood on 29th Street, between Sixth and Seventh Avenue, is a welcome base, especially for incentive groups.
The location is surrounded by a mix of eclectic shops, restaurants and galleries, so it is at one and the same time relaxing but close to so much of what the visitor wants to see. Within walking distance are Penn Station, Madison Square Gardens, the Jacob K Javits Convention Center and the Broadway Theatre District. In close proximity are the designer boutiques of Fifth Avenue, the Central Park trails as well as world renowned museums and performing arts venues.
And, on arrival in a hectic city after a long journey, it’s comforting to be welcomed by the traditional DoubleTree warm chocolate chip cookie.
The 26-storey hotel has a sleek modern design, with a warm colour palette throughout. There are 236 guest rooms and junior suites all offering Sweet Dreams by DoubleTree beds, along with five jumbo hypo-allergenic down pillows, over 100 channels on the 32-in HD-LCD TV.
For those who need to keep in touch with business during a trip, the rooms have a large desk with high speed Wi-Fi (surcharges at $9.95 per day) and desktop outlet. There is a unique clock radio that accepts MP3 players. Combed cotton terry towels and Neutrogena bath products can be found in the bathrooms.
The hotel has a business centre with complimentary printing service, as well as fax and photocopying services, and a couple of PCs for guests to use. For extra convenience remote complimentary printing is also available.
The on-site fitness centre has an array of the usual cardio equipment and free weights and within 400 metres of the hotel there is a jogging track, racquetball court, pool, basketball court and cycles to rent.
The hotel’s restaurant, Chelton's Bar and Grille, provides every kind of traditional American cuisine, from seafood to steak, and is open from 6am till 11pm weekdays, and from 7am at the weekend.
Prices at DoubleTree by Hilton New York City - Chelsea start from $199 per room, per night, excluding taxes, on a room-only basis.
