Jet, Set, Go: Cheapflights explains ‘When To Buy, When To Fly’ in 2017

Savvy travellers can save hundreds by picking the right time to click “buy” and take to the sky this year

Cheapflights, the global flight search and travel deals platform, has crunched over 10 billion lines of data to help Brits understand ‘when to buy and when to fly’ in 2017, potentially saving them hundreds on airfares to their dream destinations.

The result of Cheapflights’ analysis of the best value airfares and the optimum pre-booking period for the top holiday hotspots, the guide has revealed that savings of more than £700 per person can be snagged by savvy travellers who are buying and flying at the right time. Cheapflights has also compiled a month-by-month ‘Destination Diary’ to help consumers plan where to go, and when, for the best value in 2017.

Andrew Shelton, Managing Director of Cheapflights said, “As our thoughts turn to booking our getaways for the year ahead, we hope our analysis helps holiday planning for 2017.

“Travellers who can be flexible with their holiday dates should earmark November and early December for a winter escape, as this period is consistently the cheapest time of year to visit many of the most popular holiday spots, including Dubai, Thailand, South Africa, Barbados and New York.”

As well as revealing the travel dates for the lowest fares, the ‘when to buy, when to fly’ analysis pinpoints the optimum number of days in advance of the departure date that jetsetters should book, in order to bag the bargain fare.

“Holidaymakers with their hearts set on New Zealand for 2017 can save themselves £747 by flying the week of 29 August – 4 September (£475 per person, return), versus 11 – 17 January, when average fares are £1,222 per person, return.  The best time to book the flights to secure that £475 fare is 25 days prior to departure,” continued Shelton.

The “Destination Diary” helps sunseekers choose the optimum holiday hotspot for the month of year they are looking to travel, for example, January jetsetters should choose Cancun, where savings of more than £200 per person can be made on return fares, versus visiting in December; and Spanish sunseekers should opt for a March flight to Malaga, when fares are more than half the price they are in August (£176 return).

Key findings of Cheapflights’ analysis include:
• 28 November – 4 December is the week to fly: this week is the cheapest week to fly for the greatest number of destinations, including Barbados, Spain, Greece, Portugal and Italy. Other “cheap weeks” to travel include 18 – 24 January, 24 – 30 October, 7 – 13 November, 14 – 20 November, 21 – 27 November and 5 – 11 December.
• School’s Out: the first week of the school summer holidays (25 – 31 July) is the priciest week to fly to the most popular destinations, followed closely by the pre-Christmas week (18 – 25 December)
• Switch & Save:  savings of up to £750 can be made on airfares by switching the date of travel, for example:
◦ New Zealand – save £747 by flying 29 August – 4 September, versus 11 – 17 January
◦ Barbados – save £555 by flying 28 November – 4 December, versus 25 – 31 July
◦ Australia – save £485 by flying 30 May – 5 June, versus 18 – 24 July
◦ Mexico – save £475 by flying 31 October – 6 November, versus 1 – 7 August
◦ Canada – save £351 by flying 21 – 27 November, versus 25 – 31 July
◦ South Africa – save £343 by flying 7 – 13 November, versus 19 – 25 December
◦ Thailand – save £337 by flying 14 – 20 November, versus 19 – 25 December
◦ New York – save £283 by flying 7 – 13 November, versus 25 – 31 July

◦ Cyprus – save £198 by flying 18 – 24 January, versus 25 – 31 July
◦ Portugal – save £159 by flying 28 November – 4 December, versus 19 – 25 December
• Choosing Cancun in January (£450) can save holidaymakers more than £200, versus visiting the winter-sun favourite in December (£654).
• Airfares to The Caribbean in March are almost a third (£515) of their peak December price (£1,335).
• A June break to Rome (£84) brings savings of more than 50 per cent versus visiting in November (£180).
• Jet-setting to Sydney in May (£593) will save travellers more than £700, versus flying in December (£1,302).
