The GTMC responds to the House of Commons Transport Committee report on south east airport expansion

Paul Wait
“The report published today by the House of Commons Transport Committee which calls on the government to set out a clear timetable for south east airport expansion is most welcome and it is good to hear such common sense being voiced.

“The GTMC wholeheartedly agrees with the chair of the Committee, Louise Ellman MP, when she says that the government must make up its mind now around a decision on the location of additional capacity. Furthermore, as the voice of the business traveller, we share the concerns of the Committee that “the months ticking by constitute time wasted for the UK’s economic prosperity” and that UK plc urgently needs a decision to be made.

“The Committee’s conclusions reflect our own position that additional airport capacity is needed urgently in the south east with spades in the ground by 2020, and a clear plan looking ahead to 2030 and beyond. Following the recommendations from the Davies Commission in July last year, it is frankly alarming that, almost a year later, we are still no closer to seeing a clear commitment from the Government.

“As the report outlines, there is no legitimate reason behind the delays yet the impact is detrimental to the health of the UK economy. We hope this new report serves to add some sense of urgency to enable the Government to finally provide a clear commitment to build the new runway capacity the UK so urgently requires to remain competitive.”
