New leadership, programming and award winner for Joint Meetings Industry Council

A recent meeting of the Joint Meetings Industry Council (JMIC) in Barcelona resulted in some important decisions that will impact the direction of Council activities in a number of key areas according to outgoing President Phillippe Fournier. “We have come a long way in a few short years, and this will be built upon with the decisions arising from our most recent meeting” said Fournier.

Amongst the decisions were;
• A transition in Council leadership with EVVC President Joachim König replacing Philippe Fournier as Council President. With EVVC (the European Association of Event Centres) being one of the earliest JMIC members, König has been actively involved in Council activities for many years and offers strong continuity for ongoing activities. As well as being current EVVC President, he is also the Managing Director of Hanover Congress Centre, a leading European venue, a position he has held since 2007.  

• The selection of Mr. James Latham, Executive Producer, International Meetings Review as recipient of the 2015 JMIC Profile and Power Award. The award was made in recognition of Mr. Latham’s ongoing efforts to advance the concept of the Meetings Industry as a global economic generator using the wide range of resources available to him as a leading industry media figure. The JMIC Power and Profile Award was established by the Council as a way of recognizing individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to advancing the awareness and influence of the Meetings Industry in their respective communities.  

• The approval by Council of an initiative to assemble and curate a body of event case studies that can be used to demonstrate the wide ranging benefits arising from meetings, conventions and exhibitions as a way of enhancing industry value measures and making these more visible to key audiences. The program is a result of recommendations from the JMIC Conference on the Value of Meetings held this May in Paris, and will involve the development of case study guidelines administered by an academic review committee to ensure continuity and constancy in reporting.      

“These are all steps that will further enhance JMIC’s core mission of raising awareness of the Meetings Industry and the broad roles it plays in supporting economic, professional and community development”, said Fournier. “We are increasingly seeing a greater appreciation of the industry’s importance by governments and destinations, and we want to maintain that momentum going forward.” .
