Gane and Marshall launches Namibia desert cycling tour

Wildlife and adventure tour operator Gane and Marshall is the first UK travel company to launch a guided tour of Namibia that features the “Desert Knights Mountain Bike Ride”.  New for 2015, the 13-night Desert Nights 2015 – Namibia Guided Tour combines a thrilling journey across Namibia’s dramatic landscapes with the experience of taking part in one of sub-Saharan Africa’s most exciting adventure sports events.

With the oldest desert, highest sand dunes and the largest canyon in Africa, Namibia is an adventure playground and it’s being brought to the fore in 2015 with the 25th anniversary of independence from South Africa being marked on 21 March. Also, a new instalment of dystopian movie, Mad Max, will hit screens in May. Starring Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, and Nicholas Hoult, much of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ was shot in the Namib Desert.

One of the country’s most challenging sporting events is the bi-annual Desert Knights Mountain Bike Ride, now in its third year, which takes place in the stunning Ai-Ais-Richtersveld Transfrontier Park in the far south. Uniquely, much of the five-day, 180km cycle route is tackled in the early mornings, at sunset and at night, under a full moon, to avoid the intense desert heat. There is also a day of kayaking along the Orange River at the end of the ride.

Gane and Marshall’s new small group, guided tour, which can accommodate up to six participants, begins in Windhoek, where holidaymakers will spend one night before travelling to Sesriem and the sand dunes of Sossusvlei. From the tour continues to Aus in southern Namibia, an early 20th century settlement that is rich in First and Second World War history, and then on to the spectacular Fish River Canyon, the second largest in the world, and the starting place for the 2015 Desert Knights Mountain Bike Ride.

After completing the cycling adventure, holidaymakers will head back north to Windhoek, travelling via the Kalahari Desert and stopping at the iconic Red Dunes Lodge along the way. The final night of the tour is spent at the luxury GocheGanas Lodge, situated in a private reserve just outside the capital, where they will be rewarded with a relaxing massage and a fine three-course dinner.

The dates for Gane and Marshall’s Desert Nights 2015 – Namibia Guided Tour are 20 September – 3 October 2015 and prices start from £2,495 per person.

This includes accommodation (13 nights), all meals (with the exception of lunch on days 1-4 and days 11-13), the services of an experienced guide for the duration of the tour, emergency hospitalisation cover, tourism levy and park fees and medical support during the six-day 2015 Desert Knights Mountain Bike Ride. Prices for international flights with British Airways via Johannesburg start from an additional £900.
