Smart take to the touchline for inaugural Rugby Captains Dinner

On 16 September 2015, 48 hours before the world’s largest ever rugby tournament kicks-off, Battersea Evolution will play host to the first six captains of victorious world cup teams in a sporting dinner unlike any other. For the first time in the UK, these legends of the game will give a unique insight into what it takes to build and lead a team of world beaters to the ultimate rugby prize. The panel will explain the effect it’s had on their lives to be part of one of sport’s most exclusive clubs, with a membership of only seven!

This unique event will see international heroes from England, Martin Johnson (2003), South Africa, Francois Pienaar (1995) and John Smit (2007), Australia, Nick Farr-Jones (1991) and John Eales (1999) and the tournaments first’s winning captain, New Zealand’s David Kirk (1987) as they entertain guests with reflections of their respective tournaments. Giving a truly unique opportunity, hear first- hand, Francois Pienaar talk of his relationship with Nelson Mandela, Martin Johnson discuss the reaction here in 2003, the famous parade in front of 750,000 fans in Trafalgar Square followed by the privilege of presenting his victorious team to Her Majesty the Queen.

The Captains will be supported on the evening by many of their team mates as well as stars from stage and screen along with other sporting greats all paying their own personal tributes to these legendary leaders.

Three packages have been specially created for the occasion with prices starting from £2490 + VAT per table of 10. Guests will enjoy an award winning three-course dinner from Angela Hartnett OBE.

10% of all tickets purchased, plus all fundraising for the evening, will be donated to both Restart, the Rugby Players’ Association charity and the Willow, which gives seriously ill children fulfilling and special days out.

Greg Lawson, CEO of Smart Group, added: “The World Cup is set to be the biggest sporting event in the world next year and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to launch a project which has been close to my heart for some time; combining my passions of rugby and great hospitality experiences, whilst raising money for charity. What better way to kick off the cup? A memorable evening for all hosted by rugby royalty, in an action packed extravaganza of sporting entertainment!”

Commenting on the Rugby Captain’s Dinner 2015, former England international and World Cup winner, Martin Johnson said: “This is a rare opportunity for me and my fellow captains to be reunited, it will be great to give our guests a preview on what is shaping up to be one of the best World Cups ever; an event not to be missed by any rugby fan.”
