AIM Group moving collectively towards a better world at ICCA Mediterranean Chapter Summit

ICCA Mediterranean Chapter Summit took place in Rome, Italy, 2-4 February. Part of AIM Group International’s involvement was a presentation with a focus on sustainability, carried out by Patrizia Buongiorno, Vice President of AIM Group International. The presentation was intended to encourage Professional Conference Organisers (PCOs), Convention and Visitor Bureaus (CVBs) and Convention Centers to develop when hosting associations, corporate or other meetings and events, sustainability programs to benefit the destination.

Our global society is today affected by a growing social divide, a decline in natural resources, and demographic and climate changes. Everyone needs to establish proactive responses. Associations are particularly well positioned to face these issues because their memberships provide them with an inherent collective knowledge and experience. PCOs and CVBs have the capacity to embrace change to establish proactive responses as they have global awareness and understanding.

Meetings are good opportunities for associations, PCOs and destinations to show their concern for the community.

Patrizia Buongiorno presented several examples on social legacy activities for meetings. Some best practices showcased were activities developed jointly with the support of CVBs who are escalating their offerings of CSR tools and advice to their members.

Successful events can be marked with legacy activities such as donations to charities, auctions, and the direct involvement of the participants by dedicating one day of the congress to working directly on a project . These activities raise participant’s awareness of the community by interacting with the local people through giving public lectures, distributing food, and sharing knowledge.

Patrizia Buongiorno concluded: “The intangible effect of giving back to the community gives us a pleasant feeling of satisfaction that we are at least trying to make the world a better place. At the same time the meeting industry, as a whole, can demonstrate that meetings and incentive programmes are not a privilege of only a few people. As successful members of the community, we have a responsibility to help those that are less fortunate and contribute to the common good.”

The annual meeting of the ICCA Mediterranean Chapter gathers members from Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, South East France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, Morocco, Serbia and Turkey. Jointly organized by the ICCA Italian Committee, participation in the Summit has included 70 delegates from 11 countries, meeting over 3 days in Rome, Italy.
